“A true boutique hotel in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2012

We stayed here for three nights as part of our tour around South America. On arrival we were greeted by an extremely helpful man who gave us lots of information about the hotel and the local area before very kindly helping us with our cases up to our first floor room (there is no lift). No sooner was he gone did he return with complimentary soft drinks and cookies for us - a most welcome touch after a day's travel.

The outside of the hotel is very unassuming but inside the communal areas are stunning, really stylish decor with plenty of thoughtful amenities: Nespresso machine and cookies in reception, iMac access, plus a lovely garden area with hot tub, which we didn't use actually. It's some kind of converted house, with lots of separate rooms, corridors and staircases - all completely charming - this truly does feel like a 'boutique' hotel, a word that is very over-used.

I'm not sure if we got a little unlucky with our room, but it was very small - we had to move the bed over to create space to open our two suitcases on the floor. Apart from its size, it was tastefully decorated with a flat screen TV and a very nice (but again small), modern bathroom.

The location is truly superb - there are a multitude of bars and restaurants on all the surrounding streets, and a short pleasant walk (8 blocks, across the railway line, as directed by the hotel staff) takes you to the central square in Palermo which is bouncing with nightlife. When I read the other reviews I was worried about the 'late night doorbell' situation, but I'm pleased to say that, even though we came back late each of the three nights, the front door was answered promptly and with a smile every time.

Breakfast was lovely, though not as much choice as there would be at a bigger hotel. Service was excellent and we had eggs made to order each morning.

We requested a late checkout which was no problem, though we did get a call from a different member of staff on the morning we checked out, implying that our request hadn't been communicated properly. It was still no problem however. Overall, a great hotel in a great location!

The most exceptional aspect of this hotel was the staff. They couldn't have been nicer, more helpful, or more accommodating. Anything that we asked for, needed, or requested was produced immediately, with pleasantness and with a personal attentiveness to make our stay wonderful.

There were a few problematic aspects, though. First, let me say, with full disclosure, my family calls me a "princess" in my desires to have everything be perfect. With that said:

1. Air-conditioning/air circulation was a real problem. There are no individual controls in the rooms. I am a person who generally does not like air-conditioning, but without it at Krista Hotel there was no air circulation. Therefore, in the afternoons when we came back after sightseeing, the room was frigid. At night, they turned it off and the air was oppressively still, making it hard for me to sleep well.

2. This hotel is a converted mansion with only about 12 rooms. They are all relatively small, but attractively decorated. In our room, there was no place to sit other than on the bed. Not a huge problem, because we changed into this room knowingly because our previous room (and many of the rooms in the front of the building) only have windows/doors that open up onto an indoor courtyard. Therefore, if you open them, not only is there still no air flow, but also no privacy. So we opted into a smaller room that had a window onto an outdoor courtyard that was lovely. This would have been perfect, however, the windows do not have screens, so we were left with the choice of mosquitos or no air flow. We vacillated between the 2 and for the most part the mosquitos were not hungry!

3. Location - This a residential area with great access to many areas. However, the surrounds are not very attractive (as compared to the the Recoletta area). So, although we visited other, more aesthetically pleasing areas, the general feel of the city was a bit shabby.

4. Buenos Aires is an interesting city and we had a wonderful time. However, we were mugged once. The international food was excellent, but the Parilla (the common local meat entree) was nothing great for us. But it was wonderful going to many of the museums and parks and there's nothing better than summer when you're coming from winter.

Room Tip: get a room with a window that opens to the outside

This is a nice looking boutique hotel, acceptable quality with beautiful communal areas but I would have expected a better room standard for the price paid.

Positives:
Beautifully decorated / furnished breakfast area and lobby. Lovely fresh breakfast of home-made bread, freshly cooked eggs, fresh fruit, tea / coffee and juice.

Negatives:
We booked a standard room, the cheapest in the hotel. The room was clean and acceptable but a little more basic than I had expected at the price paid and not on par with general areas in terms of appearance / quality. Wardrobe was tiny and flimsy and we didn't unpack for this reason.

The bathroom looked nice but the shower had very little pressure and mould was beginning to appear in places in the shower area. The view from the bedroom was of the roof and a fire escape - this didn't bother me but worth mentioning. We were not given an external key which meant we had to press the intercom and wait to be let in every time we returned to the hotel. A dog barked for much of the night, every night. Again, this didn't bother me but might be useful to know.

In summary, the hotel was of acceptable quality but not value for money - I would stay here again if the rates were lower. I would assume that the more expensive rooms were of a better quality but didn't see them for myself.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to review our property.

We are pleased to know you have enjoyed our fresh breakfast.
We would like to share with you we are currently working on the improvement of the shower pressure.
Regarding the front door, as we have a concierge 24hs, the entrance is always locked due to we take care of security of our guest, not allowing the access to the hotel to anyone. But of course we are going to pay more attention to the this issue to avoid unnecessary waiting.
We would like to inform that in low season we used to have promotions rates and special offers you can take advantage.

Thank you once again and we look forward to welcoming you back to Krista Hotel Boutique in the future.

Kind Regards,

We stayed three nights at Krista at the end of a trip that included four other hotels in Chile and Argentina. The headline says it all; The hotel is located at the edeg of of an area that has bars and small shops and is dripping in period charm ( it was apparently Eva Peron's doctor's house) but it trades that charm for simple things that most people would like to get at this price point; noise is transmitted easily from room to room, the front door is always locked and you can stand in the street for a few minutes ringing the bell to get in, the rooms are small and the aircon is centralised so you get what you are given. Breakfast is very Argentinian, i.e a bit sparse by European standards and most annoying of all smoking is allowed in the small lobbies right outside the non-smoking rooms, which as an ex-smoker is really off putting. May be we have been spoiled on this trip, but I have to put Kritsa in he good end of average. Don't be put off if you like staying with slightly reserved friends in old houses, think carefully if you expect coffee makers in your room and midnight room service.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback regarding our hotel.

I would like to apologise on behalf of the hotel and its team for not exceed your expectations.

Regarding the noise, we asume you stayed in a Superior room, the only room category with a connecting door to the next room. This connection has 2 doors to avoid the noise, but I would like to share with you we are currently working on this issue and we hope to have a solution in the next future.

Concerning the front door, as we have a concierge 24hs, the door is always locked. This means we take care of our guest´s security, not allowing the entrance to anyone. But of course we are going to pay more attention to the front door to avoid unnecessary waiting.
In relations to the air conditioning, the guests are offered to modify the room temperature at their convenience by asking the Front Desk 24hs. You may also be interested to learn that we are working on individual control in each rooms. We expect to be finished in a few months.

With reference to your comment about smoking areas, all of them have an open roof, but we just had decided to allow the guests to smoke just in the garden.
Krista Hotel Boutique offers a homemade breakfast ( fresh orange juice and fruits, bread made at home, croissants, pudin, eggs, and more ) and suggestions are always welcome to improve our service.

Once again please do accept my apologies and thank you again for your feedback.

We booked Krista on the back of the Tripadvisor reviews. Our expectations were high, as the other three hotels we stayed at on our trip - all chosen using Tripadvisor - were excellent. Having arrived from El Calafate, where we stayed at the excellent Los Sauces, we found Krista disappointing.

Perhaps it is not fair to compare it to the ultra-lux Los Sauces, as Krista does not lay claims to luxury. However, it misses some basic comforts that you would expect at this price point.

It is very noisy: the echoy halls and patios devoid of soft furnishings bounce he slightest sound all over the building. The walls between rooms are surprisingly thin for such an old building: I was woken up in the middle of the night by the bathroom sounds and was about to moan at my boyfriend when I realised that he was sound asleep, and the noise came from the next door room!

The only window in the room lead onto the internal patio, so there is no source of fresh air. There are no air con controls in the room, it is controlled centrally. The room gets very stuffy during the night, and there isn't much you will be able to do about it. Oh, and guests are allowed to smoke on internal patios (even roofed ones), and the smell gets into rooms.

On the subject of cerntral control: for some reason, the guests do not get keys to the front door and have to ring a bell. On two occasions we were left waiting for about 5 minutes, and with the reception desk hidden out of the view, we were standing there in the middle of the might with no certainty of being able to get in, which is not a nice feeling.

There was no bottled water provided with the room: I am sure BA tap water is safe to drink, but it is not very nice, and we were on a different continent from our own and did not want the risk of our trip being interrupted by stomach upsets.

The rooms were cleaned daily, but unsympathetically: anything left on the bed would be chucked in a pile on top of our suitcase, including our travel-sized Tempur pillows.

The breakfast was very basic, with hardly any choice.

On the bright side, the food that was available at breakfast was of fine quality. Staff are friendly and helpful. The period building is very nice, and decor - interesting, even if a bit Spartan and not exactly in keeping with the building. There is not much management can do about the noisiness and other issues which are integral to the building, but quality of guests' stay can be significantly improved by more attention to their creature comforts.

The hotel has some strong things going for it, unfortunately they are counter-balanced by the negatives, resulting in the "average" overall rating. Management can very easily, at little cost, improve it to "good" wih a little thought and effort.

We loved our stay at the Krista Hotel and wish it was longer. With only 10 rooms, we felt that we got individualized attention. The staff was very personable and helpful with directions, suggestions, and making reservations for us. Very unique decor with hardwood floors and high ceilings. Clean. Convenient access to many restaurants in the area. We loved ending the evening in the jacuzzi in the lovely garden patio. On returning to the Krista after having spent ten days traveling to Bariloche and Patagonia, we felt that we had returned "home".

This is an absolutely beautiful, elegant, peaceful and professionally run boutique hotel. The attention to detail is everywhere; freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast; your bed turned down in the evening and a chocolate left on the pillow; spacious and very contemporary bathrooms with walk-in showers, bidets and masses of fluffy towels. And everywhere is immaculately clean. The common areas are elegant, spacious, comfortable and cool. There is a Pc with Internet access for guests who travel without their laptops and plenty of books and magazines to leaf through whilst enjoying a Nespresso. The outside courtyard/garden is a delight, the walls bedecked with jasmine and the chairs and sun loungers all have cushions! The staff are very professional but also very friendly, helpful and courteous and you are left with the unmistakeable impression that their sole aim is to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as is possible. I stayed for three nights and I was very sorry to leave. Both the location, Palermo Hollywood with its myriad of restaurants, cafes and bars, and the hotel itself are just perfect!

Room Tip: Room no. 10 is on the first floor at the back of the hotel and is very peaceful.
