“Fairly Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

My wife and I stayed in CE hotel for 4 nights. The size of the room was good.Majority of the receptionist were helpful but I'd like to thank Barbara for her help to us.every questions we had she answered perfect and always help us,very patient with travelers at CE hotel, she is one of the kindest person I've ever met.I never forget her kindness.Location was safe and in heart of downtown.

Room Tip: very clean and quiet neighborhood, try to book rooms in higher floor

The location is excellent. The rooms were very modern and clean. The breakfast was awkward with minimal choices. The staff was not helpful with suggestions. I probably would not stay here the next time I visit BA

The hotel is in an excellent location within the city, an area which is nice to stroll around and with easy access to the rest of B.A. via public transportation or a short taxi ride. Most of the staff is nice and the facilities seem to be in constant conflict between a modern "design" concept and comfort. My room was big, with an open closet (smallish for two people), it felt pretty cold (all in white, no decoration whatsoever) and somehow aged especially in the bathroom. Wi-fi was free and worked very well both in my room and in the lobby. Breakfast is served in the lobby, I did not find it very appealing and found the area quite uncomfortable to sit and enjoy. If I happen to go back it will be mostly because of its location.

We came to this hotel after staying in a dismal apartment stay in Montevideo. What a relief to find a very modern boutique hotel, helpful staff, and nice rooms (many with jacuzzis). The facility is modern, well designed (as the name implies), with "muy luminoso" rooms. (Ours faced the back of the building and was very quiet.) The staff was very helpful but was not able to change money for us. The only minor complaints was a non-functional refrigerator (quickly replaced when we raised the issue) and some mold growing behind the glass shower wall. Overall, a great choice, reasonably priced, with some very good (non-credit-card-taking) restaurants nearby.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back may be quieter. Higher up rooms are a little pricier but may be quieter.

I find it difficult to review this property without a proper idea of what passes for "Design", "Comfort" and/or "Modern" in Argentina and Buenos Aires. So I will review it based on my experience of other properties reviewed so far, and trying to be objective, keeping in mind that while applying a European standard this may not be everyone's opinion.

The good: the location is very good. The hotel is located a stone's throw away from Avenida Santa Fe (the main shopping street), the bus 152 stop is around the corner (Rodriguez Pena & Santa Fe - you can go all the way to Boca via Retiro, Casa Rosada & San Telmo from here for 2 Pesos), at 3 a minutes' walk to the Callao metro station which takes you downtown in 2 stops to Avenida 9 de Julio / Diagonal Norte, at a 10-12 minutes walk from the Recoleta cemetary... and so on. With a cab, you can reach Palermo, or Puerto Madero in 10 minutes, the Aeroparque in 15, all depending on traffic obviously. The square in front of the hotel / Ministry of Education keeps the area quiet yet feels safe, day or night. There's a tiny sandwich shop and a kiosk just next to the entrance (tip: get your water and soft drinks from the kiosk, it's half the price; the shop sells beer and booze). Regarding the hotel itself, cleanliness and housekeeping are good and no complaint. Beds are comfy, A/C works, there's a safe and microwave (?), TV, hot water, and plenty of coffee, 24 hours front desk.

The average: well I hate to say this but although friendly, the service is relatively uneven. For such a tiny hotel, there's an ever-changing crew of about 8 people at the desk - so what you ask one person doesn't necessarily transfer to the others. Some of the staff seem bored and annoyed. The advice given can be good (directions to various places, reserving a restaurant or a show), average (what to do and where to find specific things), sometimes bad (suggesting a night-time stroll from the Club de Pescadores to the Costanera Norte: not a good idea at all - the area is high-traffic, extremely far, dark and deserted...). Although the rooms are a decent size, there are a few "design mistakes" which bring down the total value of the place: 1: the non-locking bathroom door, glass window between bathroom and bedroom, and "designer" washbasin: these are highly annoying traits to be found in a vast number of so-called "design" places from Paris to Münich to Buenos Aires. No idea why this is found to be desirable, but in my opinion a bathroom/toilet should be enclosed, lockable, and practical, and not experimental in any way. 2: A standard double in this hotel costs over USD 100 per night. If you want a balcony you have to pay for the Suite, adding another USD 150 per night. In other words, the cost calculation here is a bit on the high side. It seems to me that if a 5-star luxury hotel in the Microcentro costs about the same, then cE Design hotel has an inflated concept of its own value.

The bad: In relation with the above, one would expect a certain number of things for the price. The first, is a decent breakfast. Although there is a token effort at a breakfast buffet, this is limited to: 2 types of croissant, 1 type of bread, 1 ham, 1 sliced cheese, 2 juices, some cereal, and some fruit salad. There's some dulce de leche and cream cheese to put on your bread. None of this is very tasty, and the "design" idea to sit on office chairs around a long narrow table doesn't make you want to linger or enjoy your included breakfast. Very unimpressive. The second bad aspect, and this is definitely subjective, is that the whole "design" concept is a failure. The rooms feel like a hospital operating room (white walls, floor, and neon lights), the lobby's furniture is old and uncomfortable, the only pictures on the wall are of dead snow landscapes (how depressing when you just flew in from a dead snowy European city), and the overall impression is "cheap" rather than "designer". Quotations in marker pen on the glass entrance doors and lobby? OK, we get it, it's "trendy". But the question is: does it look good? The answer depends on your own esthetics and therefore cannot be answered conclusively.

In conclusion, the experience at cE Design hotel was not great, not awful, just average. Although the location is good, I would not book this place again: I am highly, highly skeptical about this place deserving of being awarded a "Traveller's Choice 2012". The value and comfort for money was not worth it.

Room Tip: The balcony suite is probably the best room in the house, but I doubt it's worth the USD 250 per...

The Design Hotel is oft described as minimalist - sleek, basic, modern and stark white in decor. But the contemporary concept belies the warm reception (the staff is excellent and very accommodating) and overall comfortable feel in both the public areas and the rooms. The public areas, including the lobby, breakfast section and bar, are inviting and well-presented. The rooms, including the bathrooms, are exceptionally clean and functional. The king bed was extremely comfortable and the free wi-fi (in both the rooms and the public areas) worked well throughout the stay. I would have liked a comfortable chair in the room for just relaxing and reading. However, the 'functional' room is equipped only with a desk chair. The cement floor may be objectionable to some, but was not unpleasant in feel. Location (Barrio Norte) is great for shopping and access to the major sights of the City. The plaza in front of the Hotel is a nice respite area for people watching.

Room Tip: Plaza view rooms have floor to ceiling windows with nice view of Plaza Rodriquez Pena. Light and ai...

the hotel is very nice, looks nice, clean and with comfort.
I do not suggest it for lonely travellers because the hotel offers things that you don't really need: Internet, only 1 pc in the lounge and slow. Why only 1 pc in the Design Hotel? The bedroom is clean, but it's nicer the bathroom than the room itself. The bathroom has this ultra modern shower that you might don't need and a Jacuzzi that unless you share with someone, you might avoid.
There is an awesome wine bar in the downfloor, which is great but if you are in a group of friends or business trip. As alone traveller you might go there once, then you want to live the city.
However, the staff was absolutely the BEST ever meet. Extremely nice and kind.
