My wife and I stayed one night at 1890 Hotel Boutique, on the last night of our Argentine vacation, in order to experience San Telmo. Earlier in our visit, we had stayed in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, followed by a side trip to Mendoza for wine tours, before returning to BA before flying home.
Until February 2008, the 1890 was on Humberto Primo in San Telmo. The new location is on Salta, across very wide Avenida 9 de Julio from San Telmo, in a rugged urban neighborhood which is busy during the day, but fairly bleak at night. When we first arrived during the afternoon by taxi, the driver was very uncomfortable with dropping us. Although quite pleased with the Hotel itself, we were less than fond of the neighborhood. The hotel is approximately 20 minutes walking distance from Plaza Dorrego and the Sunday Feria which runs along Defensa.
Lucy, the artist-owner, has taken great care in creating a beautiful oasis. Lucy is very charming and welcoming, as are her daughter Laura and Pedro (Laura's boyfriend?). Our room was newly, comfortably furnished. The garden was relaxing. We were well taken care of, not only at check-in/check-out and at breakfast, but also during mid-day when we returned weary from our touring. We especially enjoyed the living room during our evening there, playing music while savoring our glasses of wine.
Overall, we recommend the 1890 and Lucy's wonderful family, but be aware of the location in case you would be uncomfortable in an edgier part of town.
