We stayed from 4/17 thru 4/23 (with a late checkout) and our room was the Garden Suite.
WOW. (that's a good thing)
It was early morning Thursday when we arrived and so we were not aware of where we were going, however we do understand some reviewer concerns about location, being on the "other side of the tracks" from the action. To kill time until check in time, we made appointments in the spa. With two treatments, Walking on Clouds (almost a holistic foot massage) and Jet Lag Recovery (an aromatherapy massage). The body massage was from Claudio and was amazing. My partner and I wanted a repeat performance before we came home, however, he injured his hand and could not accommodate us.
Perfect timing had us finish our treatments and head to our gorgeous, stylish, and private accommodations in the Garden Suite (pictures to come). Our mouths dropped as we entered the room. Walking by our little plunge pool and looking across to the bedroom and living room which border the pool. The bathroom was well appointed, and our upstairs sun deck was spectacular. Sorry that we didn't get to use it much, but still, it made for a nice addition!
The morning breakfast was perfect. Though, we were concerned about the bread and pastry consumption, we found we didn't do too much damage upon return to Miami! They had egg dishes that could be added to the complimentary Home Breakfast and it was perfect to start our late morning days before heading out into the city! We did have cocktails and tapas a couple of nights and it did get its fair share of visitors to the cafe area as it is open to the public. Everything from the cafe was great and staying in the Garden Suite, it was like walking over to your own staffed kitchen. The pool was nice as well, however since we had our own plunge pool, we didn't use it! ; ) Sorry, have to brag, the room was awesome, did I mention that yet?
Nice additions: The hotel has its own assortment of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash products in pump form in the tub. Made it easier than having to deal with the little sample sizes you get in most hotels (was so tempted to steal them!) I had laundry done and it came wrapped in their trademark "vintage wallpaper" paper, a nice touch.
Could Be Improved: They need to invest in new iPod connectors for the stereo system as the cables were old and falling apart (surprised they haven't invested in the iHome -iPod clock radios!)
And that suggestion is really me trying to find something wrong with this establishment!
Earlier I talked about the location of the hotel being an issue. We agree. But if you were staying in Recoleta or a tourist trap hotel (Sheraton, etc.) you would be dining in tourist trap restaurants and cafes and not experience the local eateries that you find in the Palermo area and eating with the Portenios (locals). If you were staying at those commercial hotels, you would be taking long taxi rides (under $5 US) to visit the Palermo (Soho/Hollywood) areas and vice versa, you would have to travel regardless, so it being far from the sights of BA is a dead issue.
Interesting note: The reason the sidewalks are in such horrible shape is that the area in front of your property is your responsibility to maintain and the city does not maintainit. I once saw an old lady fixing hers, quite funny when you realize why! It is tough walking around, but once you get off your high horse, you can enjoy the bohemian chic area and say you were one of the first to take a chance and live a little outside of your comfort zone. Enjoy!
