I stayed at La Otra Orilla a couple of months ago when I went to BA for a friend's wedding. The place was somewhere between a bed & breakfast and boutique hotel: not ultra-cool like Faena, nor sterile and cramped like so many supposedly hip boutique hotels. It was well decorated in a comfortable way, a mix of period and modern, full of warm touches without a trace of the florally, frilly, flouncy details that I abhor about so many bed & breakfasts. The experience was like a stay at a stylish friend's townhouse.
I stayed in the Violeta room on the first floor (second for Americans), which overlooked the street. The room had tall ceilings, a comfortable double bed with crisp white linen, an armoir, a small desk and chair, as well as a wicker chair for reading. Certainly enough space for me to spread out with my suitcase and shopping bags. Even two people would not have felt cramped. My least favourite aspect was the ensuite bathroom, as it look sloppily installed, but it was clean, with fluffy white towels and small window to the sky.
Breakfast consisted of chopped fresh fruit, yoghurt, toast, ham, cheese, jam, juices, tea & coffee, which was laid out on a side table in the period dining room with a large table. The perfect setting for guests to meet and chat. Given the beautiful weather, I could also have chosen to take my breakfast in the open-air courtyard connected to the dining room, where there was a wrought-iron table covered with a white linen table cloth.
Staff were warm and helpful, and there was someone available at the front desk around the clock. One definite plus was the computer room with internet access. Overall, the stay was fantastic. The only downsides were that you could hear a lot through the walls (not an ideal place for light sleepers) and the rooms did not have telephones (you could buy calling cards at the front desk).
La Otra Orilla is situated in a safe neighborhood just a few blocks from Av. Honduras, El Salvador, etc. in Palermo Soho, where you find numerous boutiques selling hip clothing by local designers along with cool cafes and restaurants full of 20 & 30 something year olds, both locals and tourists. I highly recommend this place and plan to stay there the next time I visit BA.
