Spent a week in BA in January 2007. Had only one bad experience, when we hopped into a cab in front of a trendy restaurant in Puerto Madera. The meter was running on double time.
Literally no other bad experiences.
We stayed in the highly recommended Solar Soler B&B, walking distance to interesting accion! Go along with anything Victoria suggests, because she has great taste and will keep you away from the tacky experiences.
She set me up same day with a hair stylist around the corner for one of the best haircuts I've had.
Rather than see a tango show, we bought tickets to La Tanguera, a musical/dance performance playing downtown. Great show!!!! Not just a tourist event, but something locals attend.
If you like to sit in a restaurant wall to wall with locals, go to Pena Colorado and squeeze in. We saw a local traditional band perform. The music was excellent! Everyone knew all the words to the songs and sang along. Just folks next door. Show started at 11 pm...so, take a nap that afternoon! Around midnight, the group of older ladies behind us got a couple of bottles of Malbec and a few grill plates to get them started.
Make time for a thorough tour of the Museum of Modern Art. A real gem...with many gems inside. You can get up close to Renoirs, Rembrandts, Picassos....
Best lunch was at Desnivel's in San Telmo. Mmmmhhhmmmm, grilled slice of provolone, morcilla, tenderloin, simple salad with good tomatoes, small bottle of Malbec and agua con gas.
Spend some time at the great music store downtown, Zivals, and get yourself some tunes! We bought music by Otros Aires and Kevin Johansen, and we can't stop listening.
We took the excellent and cheap bus to the Pampas for an estancia experience near San Antonio.
Already thinking about the next time.... sigh.
