Our family of 2 adults and 2 children (aged 8 and 11 years)stayed for over a week at the Hotel Ulisses, Recoleta in Buenos Aires in May 2006. As we had never visited BA before, we were looking for a safe and convenient location and the Recoleta district definitely fitted the bill. An upmarket location, with parks, cafes and restaurants within a short walk from the hotel, as well as the famous Recoleta cemetery where Evita is entombed. There is very "high end" shopping in the immediate area, as well as a shopping plaza and even a McDonalds for those who want a change from the local cuisine. It is quite a long walk of around 20 minutes to BA central, but taxis are cheap and plentiful. Beware of taxi ripoffs and counterfeit money. We were very skillfully scammed, so make sure the taxi driver ID is hanging over the back of the front seat and note it down... If it is missing, choose another cab or be extra vigilant.
We chose a duplex unit at the hotel, which has a small balcony facing the street (not too noisy and all windows had good shutters) and an upstairs bedroom and ensuite reached by a spiral staircase. Downstairs is a small lounge incorporating a tiny kitchenette with fridge and tea/coffee making and a hotplate and microwave for cooking, and a bathroom. We used the downstairs lounges as bedding for the children, fine for a couple of days, but did feel very cramped after a week. Not much room for suitcases and clothing, but the moderate price of this hotel was a real bonus. The staff were very friendly and breakfast was included in the tarriff. We would definitely stay there again with children for a few days, but if budget is not an issue, spend the extra on two rooms or a more spacious room designed for four people!
