The Claridge Hotel was a great choice for us first-timers to Buenos Aires. It is a very attractive old British-style hotel, wedged onto Tucuman Street within a half-block of the famous Florida Street shopping avenue. The rooms, while quite small, were very clean and modern. A full American breakfast buffet was included in the very reasonable room rate, and it was more than we needed. We ate several times in the hotel's elegant dining room and had probably the best salmon dinners we have ever eaten. We even enjoyed high tea one afternoon. The staff was very helpful (especially Rodrigo, the bellman). The desk clerk arranged for us to be picked up for a very good 3-hour bus tour of the city--it cost about $14/ppUS. The only problems we encountered here were a mistake in our rooms at check-in, and a noise issue one night. We had specifically requested nonsmoking rooms when we booked through hotels.com. The clerk mistakenly put us in smoking rooms (on the 11th floor). The clerk corrected the problem and moved us to a nonsmoking floor (4th floor). This led to the second problem. Buenos Aires is a city that doesn't go to bed early. Our first night, straight from a long flight from the U.S., there was a Quinceanera in the Grand Ballroom on the 2nd floor. The band played until about 5:30 a.m., and two floors above we heard it all. We didn't get much sleep. Evidently this is very common and they don't think a thing about parties going all night. All in all, we would definitely stay at the Claridge again. More seasoned visitors might prefer to stay in quieter areas of the city, but for first-timers, it's pretty perfect.
