My wife and I stayed here on two separate occasions: - 29th December 2006 to 2nd January 2007, and again between 5th January and 11th January 2007.
After reading all of the great reviews that this hotel has been given on this web-site, our expectations were very high. Unfortunately, in our opinion it did not live up to expectation. Do not get me wrong, this is a great hotel for the money. We just felt that some of the previous reviews were over the top.
Positives, well the location is certainly great. The staff are very professional and polite (especially one of the bell-boys whose names escapes us, but he lives in a suburb called Olivos, if you happen to meet him). Paulo the concierge was also great. The breakfast is far superior to many other quality hotels in BA. The pool and sun-deck are fantastic, but you have to get there early to secure a sun lounger. The complimentary pick-up from the airport is most welcome, but many hotels in BA now offer this service.
Negatives, well the first room we stayed in, nr 803, had just about the thinnest walls you could imagine. Not to mention that you could hear even the slighest sound from the neighbouring bathroom. Our second room, it was either 613 or 615 (can't remember) was next to the lift, so we didn't have a neighbouring bathroom and therefore no sound problem. Both rooms we stayed in were small, with very little space to put your suitcase. The closets were also small as somebody else has mentioned. However, the thing that annoyed me most was the lack of in-room safe - this is the one thing we want most in a hotel room, and is the reason why we would normally book at least a four star hotel. You would of course expect this to be standard in a hotel that advertises itself as five star!
Whilst checking out from our first visit to this hotel, we asked whether the complimentary pick-up service would be available for our second arrival four days later. We were informed that it would be. And sure enough, when we arrived back in BA at the domestic airport, a car was wating for us. However, when we checked out for the second time, the hotel tried to charge us 50 pesos for the pick-up, stating that it wasn't complimentary. If it hadn't been complimentary, we wouldn't have asked for it, as the same journey in a taxi costs just 18 pesos. After a few minutes of arguing, the hotel did agree to delete this charge from my invoice.
We travel to BA frequently as my wife is Argentine. For a similar price, we would recommend the Sheraton Libertador, which is just as well located being just 2 blocks away, and is not on such a dark back-street as the Claridge. The Sheraton Libertador has larger rooms which are also quieter.
