My husband and I went to the Cementerio de la Recoleta last month. We decided to go to Recoleta on our own and stroll around the cemetery.
Outside the front entrance a young woman handed us a very nice and free map of the cemetery. A young man who was with her handed us a tract about Aids and explained that he has Aids and would we like to donate to help Aids patients. My husband handed him a few pesos. We then proceeded to use the map to navigate our way around to some of the main mausoleums. Once we entered the cemetery there were several people who offered to be guides but we turned them down. They were not pushy at all.
We enjoyed wandering around the tombs. It was interesting to see how people had competed to see who could have the most impressive memorial. It was also surprising to see that others are neglected and even have trash thrown in them.
The photos I am posting with this review are located in the center of the spoke where number 44 is. It is a shady spot where we were able to rest for a few minutes on a bench.
I would recommend going to the cemetery. It is possible to go for a casual tour such as we did or get a more in depth tour once you get there. These options are available for those who want to be flexible in their plans.
