We were very excited when we booked our stay at La Faena last August for this past trip. Then came all the bad reviews that were posted on tripadvisor, and I started to get a little bit nervous. I contacted the hotel about a month and a half before we arrived, and the experience managers were quick with responses. They helped us get flights for other parts of our trip, and gave me several suggestions for my sister's birthday night. This made me feel a little bit better about the trip, and we figured we would see what happened when we got there. We arrived to about ten people welcoming us to the hotel. The look of the front lobby was absolutely breath taking.
Our room was a good size, and the bathroom was huge. There was three of us staying in the room, and there was enough room for the cot and all of our luggage and clothes (with three mid-20s girls,...you would think this might be a problem). The look of the room was absolutely fantastic. Red velvet enclosed the bathroom glass area, which you could close all the way for privacy. Mirrors were everywhere. Some things were awkwardly placed, but the lights next to the bed helped. It's more about the look than the function, but we prefer the look.
We took full advantage of the experience managers, and never had a problem of not being able to find one. (In fact when there were two, even if they were both helping the people sitting, one always stopped what they were doing to come over and ask if you needed anything.) Sebastian (who I had been dealing with over emails before arriving), was absolutely wonderful and remembered me. On my sister's birthday they called in the morning to wish her a happy birthday, and later when we came in from the pool they had placed a cake with a card. So very thoughtful.
The pool is quite lacking in seats, but it is once again look over function. People sip champagne or their drinks and watch the other pretty people sitting by the pool. Please don't leave your stuff and come back later in the day for the seat, we had to share one seat while we watched that no one was sitting on three of the seats, their stuff was just there. Either go to the pool, or not. Eventually people get up, and you get seats.
People complain about the wear and tear-but if you take a closer look-the hotel is supposed to look like that. All the furniture at the experience manager's desk was refurbished furniture-to match the decor of a refurbished building...even the pool had a refurbished look to it.
This is not a hotel you stay at if you are on a budget. The experience managers expect that you want the best of what they can offer. (hence why someone might have complained that they overprice)...in fact for my sister's birthday we went to a Tango show, and sat VIP. We got unlimited drinks, a better menu than non-VIP and front row seats-all for 100US$ each-which was an amazing deal. (considering the wine and champagne, as well as three course meal AND the show) It was not paid to the experience managers, it was just a reservation they make for you-so they don't get anything for it.
It was most definitely the coolest hotel I've ever stayed at, look wise. I felt like I was experiencing something I would not be able to experience anywhere else, which was the whole point of the "hotel and experience". I would definitely go back there again.
We realized the day before we left that it seemed they were working on the rooms below us, but were polite not to do any work till about 11am. Perhaps doing major changes to the look, I'm not sure-but it definitely wasn't something minor they were doing to the rooms. If you want to experience something different than the average hotel, definitely stay here. Make sure you take full advantage of the experience managers.
