“Great hotel in a perfect location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2010

We really enjoyed our stay at the Alvear Palace. The hotel is located in a beautiful Recoletta neighborhood, walking distance from great shops, cafes and sightseeing attractions. The property itself is beautiful and luxurious. We had a small wrinkle when we first checked in and were showed to our room. We booked a junior suite for US$500/night. The room was pretty small and was definitely not worth that price. But upon my complaint we were immediately moved to a great two-room suite with a large bathroom. It was really well furnished and decorated. The service was always very friendly and accomodating. The hotel doesnt try to nickel and dime you on every step as some other properties do. They have a great business center with free Internet access. At breakfast when you ask for something extra - like a capuccino or a different kind of juice - you don't get an answer "this will be extra." They just make sure that you get what you need. I was especially impressed when at one point we called room service and asked for some salt and 2 minutes later they were at our door with a family-size package of salt :) No charge. This is something other hotels can learn from. I would rather pay more upfront for the room than constantly be annoyed by extra charges coming at you from every direction (frequent travellers know what i am talking about). The food at the hotel was great. We didn't try the french restaurant but breakfast buffet was outstanding and drinks and food at the beautiful lobby bar were really good too. We would definitely return!

We spent one night here in a two bedroom suite with our 2 sons ages 27 and 29, and have never been more pampered. The room was lush and luxurious with beautiful crystal chandaliers and French antiques. Our own personal butler was very cool!!
The common grounds were also spectacular.
The complimentary tea in L'Orangerie and the fabulous breakfast buffet were wonderful. Staying here for a night is a great way to see the other side of Buenos Aires. The area is interesting but Palermo Vieyo is still our favorate. If we returned to Buenos Aires, we will go back to the Legado Mitico in Palermo Vieyo since that area is much more fun. Outdoor dining, common in Palermo, is rare near the Alvear Palace. However, staying at both of these places in the same trip was perfect. It gave us two completely looks at Buenos Aires.
Although I wouldn't stay here again due to the cost and location, I would definitely recommend it!!! If you can't afford to stay here, it would be worth it to go and have a drink in the lobby. WOW!

We spent three nights at the Alvear. A fantastic hotel, great service. We loved the new Cigar Bar, it is a unique place to enjoy cigars and the best wines of Argentina. Perfect location, the best hotel, for pleasure or business in Buenos Aires.

On our recent journey to Argentina we stayed at the Park Hyatt, the Alvear Palace and the Hilton in Buenos Aires.

Unfortunately, the stay at the Alvear Palace was a keen disappointment.

A leading hotel of the world does not qualify by providing Hermès amenities, Egyptian cotton bed linen and crystal chandeliers but by offering an exceptional level of service & gentleness and this is what we have been missed at the Alvear.

The service was arrogant and snotty and it was so evident as people in Argentina are in general extremely friendly & polite. When we arrived by car, the porter did not even say: "Welcome at the Alvear Palace" and we have been greeted with the same chilly welcome by the receptionist. The entire staff in the lobby did not even say "good morning" or "good evening" when guests entered the lobby. I must admit that we have not experienced such a bad service in any luxury hotel elsewhere in the world.

Finally, the interior of the public area as well as our room remained us to a visit to the house of my 80 years old aunt (old carpets, golden fittings, curtains with flower design, baroque styled furniture, marble almost everywhere).

All in all, a badly managed 5 star hotel. What a pity as the location is outstanding.

Do not think twice, book the Park Hyatt which is a wonderful hotel (if you can afford it, book the palace wing).

I have been to BA several times, and this hotel remains on top every time. We were given an upgrade to a suite without asking. We stayed a week and were well acquainted with the layout which is very comfortable. They have the best breakfasts in South America. Also, we took advantage of the lovely stores around Recoleta and Palermo. The butler service was wonderful and they kept us abreast of everything we should know. The spa is also wonderful.
I look forward to staying there again. It is one of the world's greatest hotels.

As soon as we walked through the door I felt special - you could sence the atmosphere and history from the golden decor and surroundings. Check in was easy and personable and we were given all the information we needed before being shown to our room.

I had booked a junior deluxe suite but when we walked in with a personal butler/concierge, it seemed bigger. I asked if all junior suites were like this but she advised that we had been upgraded to an executive suite - impressive and not even mentioned at the front desk - nice touch! We were offered an unpacking service (declined) complimentary pressing of 2 garments each and complimentary tea/coffee - both taken up!

We had 2 bathrooms, 3 LCD TV's and a jacuzzi! Not bad at all. The main bathroom had a TV in, over the bath which also had a shower in it too. It was spacious as was the bedroom with a large comfortable bed and delicious cotton sheets! The sitting room, sofa and 2 chairs made for a decent size lounge area with the 3rd TV (after the bedroom). We didn't see much of the butler at her desk, but the one time we needed her, I could reach her by phone, so that was fine.

We had tea the 2nd afternoon, which was situated in an opulent styled dining area and orangerie type outhouse. Tea was reasonably priced and was very forthcoming - as many pots as you liked in the price, and we were advised to share a 'tea package' between us, which was a good tip and more than enough. The sandwiches were good, but the pastries and cakes were both tasty, dainty and fulfilling! Recommended.

The hotel itself is situated in a nice area and we found this lovely italian cafe bar only 2 blocks away, drenched in atmopshere and was loved by the locals. We had a lovely late lunch the first afternoon and the steak sandwich melted in our mouths, washed down by a lovely cool beer! We enjoyed it so much, we went back for a coffee another day, always busy and bustling, but you could watch the world go by.

Also near by was a 'flea market' and the grave/mausoleum of Eva Peron, just a 10 minute walk away. About 20-30 minutes walk was the main shopping area (off Florida Street, I think) which was full of many large and small ecclectic shopping experiences. We felt perfectly safe walking around. One night we found a local Italian restaurant, near our cafe, which whilst we ate at 8, the local came pouring in at 9! Clean, good food and service, a nice evening.

We also ate at the hotel in the fine dining restaurant. Embarrassingly I had not brought a long sleeved shirt or jacket with me ( I could not see it in the brouchure at time of booking our holiday, or in the local information - I was on holiday after all!), but luckily as I was staying there, I was offered a jacket to wear throughout the evening! The service was again attentive as we were welcomed by a champagne trolley offering us cocktails at the table. The staff were friendly and a bit chatty which was nice. We had a couple of amuse bouches and intermediaries with bread and sorbet (twice - they must have forgotten about the first lot!) and the food was of a high quality. I had a most gorgeous melt in the mouth steak, flambeyed at our table in a lovely red wine jus, all adding to the experience. In saying that and it seems harsh after my comments, I felt it lacked a tiny bit of atmosphere just to give it that tiny crowning glory, but that didn't at all hamper a lovely evening at all, and as we were going out, we were called back (oh no, what had I done now?!), but they offered us a small token to take away - very nice touch indeed.

Overall, this hotel has class - we have travelled around the world in many 5 star hotels and this is the only place I felt I had to dress up for breakfast! I loved the hotel, the status, the atmosphere, the room, service (umbrellas at your beck and call if raining outside, on trust). There were press outside the stairs going down to the pavement, waiting to snap at someone - I mumbled jokingly that I had no comment to make at this stage and they all looked at me bewildered! I think Charles Aznevore and Lilly Allen were in town, so not sure if they stayed there. They didn't like guests taking photos in the lobby, a couple of people were told not to, as I was, although the staff took a photo of us enjoying pre- dinner cocktails.

Had a fabulous 3 nights there, looked after by everyone who was friendly and courteous and would go back again without any hesitation, but this time, with a long sleeved shirt!
