We just returned from BsAs were we had a wonderful stay at the Alvear Palace. Our standard rate room was very large (compared to hotels in Rome or Paris) and the service was excellent. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We loved the old-world charm of the hotel. The French restaurant was very good and the equivalent of a solid one star in France. The complimentary arrival massages were a bit strange in that the masseuses spent a lot time on the feet and less time on the shoulders where I really needed the help after a long flight. All in all, I would definitely stay here again. We also loved the quite neighborhood and the nearby park and graveyard.
Later in our trip, we stayed a few days at the Intercontinental Hotel, which was more like a big-city American business oriented hotel. Good, but rather impersonal service. The area surrounding the hotel is also very busy and noisy during the weekdays. However, the wine bar on the first floor was outstanding.
Other recommendations:
Restaurant “O” in Palermo with a chef trained at Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago.
Oviedo-also in Palermo, where we had a dinner for 16 that was excellent with flawless service. We also had a dinner for three here that was also very good. Spanish-sytle seafood is the specialty.
La Cabana-near the Alvear Palace where we had the best steak of the trip.
La Cabana de las Lilas-excellent view and a very good steak, but the restaurant is a bit of a factory serving a 1000+ meals a day.
Keep in mind that all restaurants allow you to share items, so one steak is enough for two.
We saw two tango shows with the one at the Bar Sur being the most authentic and enjoyable. The setting is rather seedy which adds to the experience. Try to go later (after midnight) to avoid the "dinner show" because the snacks they serve are not much to write home about. Even if you have to pay for the snacks, the show is worth it.
