I probably should have known better. We stayed at the Four Seasons Buenos Aires our first night and then five nights at the Four Seasons in Carmelo, Uruguay (absolutely FABULOUS). To then move to a substantially cheaper hotel, I expected a decrease in service, room size and presentation, etc.
Upon check-in, we were told that we could not have the adjoining rooms we had reserved. We have three girls, ages 10, 8 and 4, so that was a little discouraging. We were on the same floor. Check-in was a bit of a hassle and the front desk staff was overworked and, as a result, a little snippy. Also, the staff required that we give them all five of our passports (something we had not had to do elsewhere).
We had two king rooms on the club floors (exactly like the pictures on the website). Plenty of closet space but the dressers, etc., were pretty banged up. I know reviewers have mentioned the bathtub/showers. It cracked me up. My little 4-year old had to bend her knees to fit in the "tub".
The pool is of decent size and the roof opens up so we were able to enjoy some beautiful weather. The pool area is pretty grungy, though, just rusty and old. Nothing severe enough to stop three little girls who adore swimming, though. There is no longer a hot tub.
Sounds ok so far, right? Well....We had spent the morning on Florida St and the girls were just wiped out. We had two hours before our tour guide was to pick us up again. When we arrived back in our room, it was absolutely filled with a noxious smell. I mean, it immediately made your eyes tear up. (turns out they were completely varnishing the room next door and it was overpowering. The rooms are just full of wood - an entire wall with closets and then all of the furniture!).
I tried to call the front desk three times and no one ever answered. Finally, a woman did answer and basically told me I was crazy and hung up. Meanwhile, my husband took the whole troop to our other room and all four of them "tried" to take a nap on a king bed. I was finally able to get someone at the front desk to send someone up to unlock the windows so we could get some air in the room. After 20 minutes, no one came. I was feeling really sick being in that room but wanted to get it aired out so that two of my girls and I could sleep in there that evening. Finally, I went downstairs and waited in the 15 minute line that always existed at the front desk. I was so tired and had a such a headache, I started crying when I was explaining it to the girl. She just said "I'm sure they are painting somewhere and it will be done soon." Let me just reiterate that this was not just paint fumes. I'm not a total wimp. It was like paint thinner (and turned out to be wood varnish)! She said she'd send someone up but that I had to be in the room to let them in. I went back up and ended up getting so sick I threw up. My husband - who'd had no idea what was taking so long - was mortified to see me crying and sick; it's just really not at all in my nature. He kidnapped - it felt like it - a housekeeper who could not believe how horrible the room smelled; immediately got someone up there to open a window. Although that didn't really help, it was now time for us to meet our tour guide (so much for that nap).
When we returned at 10 PM, the hotel finally said that they could move us. Although it still smelled, I was so worn out, we just fell into bed and left early the next morning.
If that hadn't happened, I would have been fine with our experience at the hotel and felt as if we had received what we paid for. As it was, it really ruined the day and I had a whopper of a headache the entire day. I'd just be careful when staying here because when things like this happen at this hotel, the staff certainly doesn't try to "fix" it. As a matter of fact, you just have to wait for long periods to be looked at as if you are a pyscho. Throughout the entire experience, not one person told me they were sorry.
Oh, and the club floors include breakfast. My husband asked where the "included breakfast" was. We went as directed and were charged $92. When he informed them that breakfast was included, they said "oh, not on that floor - you need to go to the club floor". They refused to take the charge off. Upon checkout, they had charged us TWICE for the breakfast. The gentlemen behind the desk then gave me attitude when I pointed it out to him. I told him about our experience with the varnish and he took a whopping $10 off our bill for the wireless internet charge we needed to use to tell our tour guide to meet us outside of the hotel so that we could get some air. Unbelievable! Thank God we don't smoke or we probably would have blown up.
Hope you have better luck.
