Like others, we were a little apprehensive after reading some of the other reviews of this hotel. We booked using points so we went ahead anyway. From the moment we arrived, though, we began a great experience. The staff (bellman, front desk, business center and especially concierge) were extremely courteous and helpful. The concierge staff were particularly good when it came to selecting restaurants or even little cafes -- very well informed and took the time to find out what our tastes were before choosing a place. Our room was very nice (404). A little bay window looked to the side street but still had a clear view of Plaza San Martin's trees and greenery. Housekeeping provided a tidy-up and fresh towel service each evening.

The location was very central, with fast taxi rides to all neighborhoods were we went in the evening. It is also right at the foot of Florida, the pedestrian shopping street. It is an easy walk to the Casa Rosada and Plaza de Mayo and a do-able walk to Recoleta. At night, we were told by everyone to have the hotel or restaurant call a Radio Taxi to avoid problems; we followed this advice and had no issues.

We'd advise to skip the hotel breakfast in favor of Florida Garden (only two blocks away) or any of the smaller places EXCEPT the Il Gran Cafe which was overpriced and unlike everywhere else in BA clearly rushing tourists in and out to generate revenue.

For us, the Plaza was a comfortable and friendly 'home base' for our time in Buenos Aires.

From the moment I walked through the main doors of the hotel, everything about my stay was wonderful! The front desk staff were friendly and efficient. The room was spacious and the beds were soooo comfortable. The breakfast buffet was incredible! All of the staff were friendly and helpful. And the location of the hotel is ideal. I highly recommend this hotel.

We have been staying at this hotel for 25 years and have seen all of its ups and downs, we even lived here for two months a few years ago. We stayed seven nights (8/19 to 8/26) and had a very good experience. We had what they call a Park View Room (706) and it was a nice size room with a very confortable king sized bed and a bathroom that is just ok because it is a bit old but charming. The bathtub needs to be refinished. The staff were wonderful and check in and check out were fast and efficient, although I know from experience that it is not always the case. The breakfast buffet is good but expensive compared with eating out of the hotel. The location can't be beat, close to everything.

I am a Platinum Marriott member, and was concerned staying in this hotel, based on some of the reviews. I am very glad that I decided to stay there, as I really liked the hotel. The staff is wonderfull and attentive, and the hotel itself very historic. It is correct that the rooms are not all the same, but that is the charm of staying in a historic hotel. All in all, a hotel to remember and recommend.

You have to be a little masochistic to enjoy this hotel, I suspect - but I really like it!

It's well located on Plaza San Martin at the start of Florida. It's a grand old hotel and the main dining room shows one what the hotel was like in its heyday in the 30s - the ancient fans are amazing! The hotel has atmosphere.

In an old hotel like this, rooms come in all shapes and sizes, with many suites. It's worth paying for one with Club access - breakfast there is worthwhile. If you go for room 690, you get a suite with your very own large grassed roof garden, and I think 686 has access to another section of roof garden.

The rooms are of variable quality. On one trip, I had water pouring through the ceiling after a storm - but was rapidly moved to a large, recently-redecorated suite as an upgrade. The bathrooms are fitted in old marble but some fittings are dated. I find the rooms and the beds very comfortable.

The main restaurant is excellent, and should be experienced once for the ambience alone. The secondary restaurant is less good but Buenos Aires has such splendid restaurants that you won't want to use it anyway.

Staff are - how shall I put this? - highly variable in quality. All the concierges are extremely knowledgeable and efficient, but they range from the friendly to the downright haughty. Front desk staff are pleasant and willing but get completely swamped when more than two people try to check in or out at the same time! Allow lots of time. Club staff are good.

I always enjoy the experience of staying here, but I hesitate to raise expectations too high because, with this hotel more than any other I know, enjoyment is very much a matter of one's own peculiar tastes! If you want a more familiar, reliable five-star service there are some good alternatives.

  • Liked — General ambience, comfort of rooms
  • Disliked — Front desk queues
