“Great folklore show”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2014

We were recommended this restaurant for a Tango dinner show by our hotel receptionist at the Broadway Suites. The asking price was 55 US dollars a head.

It turned out to be a bargain.

Private transfers were included, as we're unlimited drinks throughout the evening. I an normally disappointed with theatre meals but here the main courses were excellent as was the house wine.
Starters and desserts were acceptable and they don't believe in nouvelle cuisine so you won't go hungry.

The show itself was more than just dance. It included local instrumental music, several singers and pan pipe music. The Tango dancers were excellent.

Our hotel advisor rates this show as better than some on offer for 100USD. He is probably right.

“Amazing tango show!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

This was my first tango show, so I have nothing to which to compare it, but I was extremely impressed. The meal was above average, the service very good, and the music and dancers spectacular. Even the lighting was well done, and I enjoyed the slide show of tourist sites in Buenos Aires and around the world and famous Argentines, Latin American soccer players, and the like. I arrived when Cátulo opened at 8:30 p.m. and I was given a seat right next to the stage and served promptly.

The small tango orchestra, the 4 singers, and the 10 dancers were incredibly talented athletes (no other word captures it!), the costumes were impressive, and the choreography excellent. The place is named for Cátulo Castillo, a famous Buenos Aires tango lyricist who died in 1975.

After the show, the management was not only gracious about calling a taxi for me, but also assigned the doorman to wait with me on the street. Cátulo is in the Abasto neighborhood, about 2 blocks from the Abasto shopping mall. I felt safe there at night, but it never hurts to take a cab when you're a woman traveling alone.

Only a few drawbacks. You pay for quality: the show costs more than $200 (800 pesos). If you’re lucky enough to catch the Groupon Buenos Aires offer, the menu is reduced by half – 3 entrée choices (a bargain, in fact, for vegetarians) and 2 dessert options. My entrée, spinach-and-ricotta-stuffed crepes, was tasty, but the brownie was overbaked and accompanying ice cream was worse than some I’ve had in the US, never mind in Argentina. However, the Groupon offer was exceptional: 2 guests for less than $50 total, including wine and other beverages. Given the current exchange rate, this is the bargain of the decade!

“Excellent tango show”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012 via mobile

Seems to be off the tourist track. Reasonable food followed by an excellent show. The tango band provided some amazing sounds, and watching the audience reaction to the singing and dancing gave an insight into the subtlety, and importance to them, of this art form. I went in thinking that a tango was a specific dance, but left realising that it was a style that included movement, music and maybe even an approach to life.
All was in Spanish so the jokes and some of the context was lost, but the atmosphere did not need any translation. Entry fee is expensive, but we thought overall the evening was very good value.

“Cátulo is re fabuloso!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

I visited Cátulo Tango in July, 2012 and was extremely impressed by not only the professional performance and incredible talent of the tango dancers and singers but also the amount of food served. The food was delicious, more than ample items to choose from and the presentation was beautiful. The service from the hostess and waiters was excellent and I did not feel rushed during my meal. The establishment is clean, nicely decorated and as a tourist, I felt very welcomed by all staff. I highly suggest Cátulo if you want a "tango" and culinary experience that is positively memorable for a very reasonable price!
