I and friends stayed at this hotel as part of a tour of South America. It is a lovely, elegant hotel. Rooms/beds comfortable and clean. Great buffet breakfast with amazing cakes and tarts for breakfast! Along with great variety of fresh fruit, jams, cheeses, cold meat, hot items, breads. The freshly-made brioche a highlight. We all liked the self-serve urns of coffee and hot milk. And the location of the hotel within the Recoleta area is great--a short walk to the park and also the Recoleta cemetery. Lovely shops nearby--as well as icecream shops with about the best icecream I've ever had. But I'm finding it hard to give an overall rating to this hotel. What, in the group's opinion, lets this hotel down is the attitude of many of the staff. Not the housekeeping staff--they were friendly and very hard working. But the various levels of staff in the lobby and also the staff in restaurant used for breakfast. And it's hard to find a word that adequately describes their attitude. Not quite rude but certainly not welcoming; almost arrogant. And we noticed that there wasn't the bonhomie between or among the staff as we'd seen in other hotels. There were two instances that stayed with us. One was the delivery of laundry. We'd paid extra to a local laundress to have our laundry delivered to the hotel. When her little son brought some of our laundry to reception, delivery was denied. Many of us then had to scramble to pick up this laundry before the laundress shut for the evening. We just felt that this was so small-minded and did not reflect well on the good-will needed by hotels to attract customers. The hotel's laundry service was comparatively quite expensive. One other instance especially bothered us, especially as Australians are generally not as interested in job distinctions and will just help if help is needed. We were checking out at 8 a.m. so not especially early. But the porters had not yet arrived. So, our tour director, a young woman, had to get our suitcases from our hallways, with many of us helping. Once in the lobby, there were 3 hotel employees just standing around--all men--and I could never figure out what their jobs were. They just watched as our group, many in their 70's, then helped our tour director hump our suitcases down the stairs to our waiting bus. Finally one employee did deign to help but the other two, both young men, just stood. We were incredulous!!
