“WOW!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014

My stay here was beyond amazing. Although a short walk from the parking lot (if you choose not to use the valet services) it helps you appreciate the surroundings. As soon as you walk in the whole lobby just opens up to you. Service was excellent especially the front desk staff. There is a huge breeze-way that leads straight to the pool area which looks absolutely stunning. The rooms were beautiful and the beds were amazingly comfortable. A must stay!

The first thing that strikes you when you enter the Ritz Dove Mountain is how it is not like most other Ritz Carlton hotels. unfortunately, its "difference" is not a positive here. Dove Mountain is a development not really in Tucson, but in Marana, which is about 35 miles from the airport and 10-15 miles outside Tucson. The hotel is set back, almost by itself, on the side of Dove Mountain. The access is from I 10, and it is about 8 miles off I-10. The roads are long, wide, and marked as speed traps all the way. Four - six lane roads have 35-40 mph limits, and they are strictly enforced. The police engage in a very dangerous game of waiting at lights in the night with their lights out. We almost rear-ended a completely blacked out Marana police car at 4 in the morning. It was scary and shocking, because the road was otherwise empty, and the only reason for this approach could be revenue. One wonders if the developers of Dove mountain know the local police force is engaging in this dangerous practice (or if even the local elected officials are aware). On to the hotel. As noted, it's not like most Ritz Carltons. Having stayed at more than 30 Ritz Carltons, Dove Mountain simply does not meet the standard for excellence, either in rooms, décor or service. The physical is a more rustic, neo-classic southwestern. It is overdone in terms the oranges and browns, and underdone in terms of refinement. While clean and neat, it just did not feel like a Ritz. The staff is very young, energetic, and upbeat, but there is not the typical depth of service staff. Unlike most Ritz properties, staff is not always easy to find and not always ready to help. The exception occurred in the business center, which is a comparatively well-equipped facility, with exuberant and capable aides. The views on the "right" side of the property are wonderful, and we enjoyed sitting outside for dinner and drinks. On the entry side, however, there really are no views. The difference is not small, and you should reject any visit that would put you on the side viewing the driveway and, quite literally, the side of the mountain. The rooms were reasonable size, with southwestern décor and furniture. The bathrooms were spacious enough. We had a standard room, so our expectations were reasonable. We were not disappointed with the room size and comfort, except as noted above -- the overall property simply did not meet the typical Ritz standard of elegance. While we had a "special" rate, at the rack rate of almost $400 the property would be a terrible disappointment. The restaurant fare was above average, but, again, it fell short of our (admittedly) high expectations for a Ritz property that charges resort rates, and a resort fee of $48/ night. The menus are short with a decidedly pedestrian, soutwestern flair. With Tucson's wonderful early spring air, however, the food was secondary. The evening was still a delight. We did not get a chance to try to pool, but it was a beautiful scenery, and we are sure it would have been enjoyable. The fitness center was well equipped and a relatively bright spot. If you have a conference at the hotel, we expect it would be relaxing. But be prepared that you are really in the middle of nowhere. We needed/wanted to "run out" and the closest commercial area was a 15-mile, 25 minute drive along the old highway, which would have been nice in the daytime, but was a challenge at night.

Room Tip: Do not take a room that does not face the back, unless you plan to spend no time in the room because...

The Ritz Carlton at Dove Mountain is a lovely resort. That being said, I will list the positives and negatives I have found. My rating took into account this list complied by members in our group through numerous discussions.

Positives
1. Comfortable rooms with wonderful linens, plenty of amenities, and bottled water provided daily.
2. Pleasant, helpful, and happy employees who always speak and smile. Excellent.
3. A children's pool with a waterside.
4. A separate pool for adults.
5, Beautiful golf course though pretty difficult.
6. Weather.
7. Immediate attention to requests.
8. Numerous fire pits took away the evening chill.
9. Good internet connections.
10. Balconies for each room.

Negatives
1. Absolutely no shopping.
2. Located in an area that is very remote.
3. Walking trails are available with guided yours for a cost of $65.
4. Rattlesnake warning signs on property. We' were told not to wander outdoors in the evening because of snakes, mountain lions, and cactus plants.
5. Few restaurants from which to choose.
6. Charge of $25 to sit by the Spa pool.
7. Spa appointments were already completely booked when we arrived.
8. Not much to do if you are not a golfer. No tennis that we saw. Could take jeep rides, but they were booked.
9. Local beers were not liked by members of our group.
10. Shower head water spray was too light.

Room Tip: I would ask for a room overlooking the pool rather than the parking lot side. The pool is far enoug...

Dear Guest,

First and foremost, we greatly appreciate your business and thank you for taking the time to compile a very helpful review of our property. The Resort is a secluded hideaway reflecting our peaceful and scenic surroundings, offering a sanctuary for our guests to enjoy all of our amenities, whether it be hiking, golf, bicycling, a jeep tour, a luxurious spa treatment or relaxing by the pool. Because we are located in the desert, it is important that our guests are aware of the vegetation and wildlife that are indigenous to the area.
We do offer five dining venues on property for our guests' convenience and advanced reservations for dining, activities and spa are always highly recommended prior to arrival via our Concierge. We do apologize, however, that availability for certain venues was limited during your visit.
Your comments are very valuable and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Dove Mountain in the future.

Kind regards,
Liam Doyle, General Manager

Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain has excellent service in the resteraunts, however, they could do a better job in the spa and staffing so they are available for services. The staff was friendly but not very accommodating in the spa.

Room Tip: Spa appointments are very difficult to book, they seem to be understaffed for a hotel and spa the si...

My husband, daughter (4 years old), and I spent 4 nights at this resort in February. It was a great break from the winter we've had in Chicago. Check-in was friendly and efficient, although not with the extra services and attention of other higher end properties we've stayed at in the past. Our room was nice and comfortable, and my daughter got a kick out of the television next to the deep soaker tub, where she insisted on taking 2 baths every day. We had a view overlooking the pool which also provided a perfect view of the evening flautist from our balcony each evening. Listening to the music while watching the moon rise over the mountain in the background was one of our favorite experiences during this vacation. We did the in-room tent experience for our daughter during our stay. It was very cute and the included book, stuffed tortoise, and lantern made it extra special for our daughter. My only complaint is that it had a bad odor that by the end of our stay permeated the whole room. I'm assuming it came from the feather bed in the tent, but it definitely wasn't pleasant, and it's my fault that I didn't have it removed a couple days into our stay. It obviously prevented my daughter from actually sleeping in the tent, which had been our plan. The pools were nice, and my daughter loved the water slide. I liked the design of the lower pool for young children, since it has a couple sections that were only about 2 feet deep. It allowed us to actually sit on the side of the pool at times while our daughter played. The food was good on-site, and we had great service with the exception of just one server at breakfast one morning. I've read complaints that you have to drive to eat off-site, and that's true. There are a couple restaurants within 5-10 minutes away or Tucson is about 20 minutes away. We had read about the remoteness of this resort before traveling so knew what to expect. We actually appreciated that it sat in the midst of so much quiet and natural beauty, and that's what would bring us back. Two tips: Take the guided walk that is included for all guests. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative of both the native plants and animals as well as the history of the area. Make sure everyone in your party has closed toe shoes since it is small rocks and dirt that you'll be hiking on. Second, unless you're with children who really, really want the s'mores experience, skip it. It cost $25 for the kit, and we thought it tasted pretty awful. Overall, it is a beautiful setting and lovely resort with attentive staff, and we would consider staying here again.

I work in the hotel industry so when I tell you that the folks at Dove mountain Ritz Carlton offer 5 star treatment beleive it. The resort is awesome and the service is impecable. From check in to the Ranger on site, everyone was great and enjoyed their jobs. I was awed by the valet who went for our car everytime we were going out...you gave him the ticket, and not once did he walk to go get the car, he RAN.
The only thing I really didn't like was having to pay $ 48 daily resort fee even though you were not going to use all the services and amenities. But all in all, it was well worth it. The restaurant at the Golf course makes the best milk shake ever..and the hamburgers are a work of art..huge and tasty...Everyone at the resort was great.

Room Tip: get a room where yu can view the sunset...go on the hike with the Ranger so you can view the sunset...

Spent two wonderful days at the Ritz Dove Mountain. Taking full advantage of the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts benefits, we checked in early and were upgraded to a casita that was absolutely fabulous. A little removed from the main building, set along the canyon with views of the mountains. The room was huge and beautifully done in upscale southwestern chic; the bathroom was simply luxurious. We had our own side porch set with chairs and table; perfect for morning coffee.

Service was exactly what you would expect. From the valet attendants to the front desk, to the pool, to the restaurant and bar staff everyone was pleasant, professional and quite close to perfect.

This is definitely a “fun in the sun” kind of resort complete with hiking, ping-pong tables, pools, hot tubs and to top it all off the waterslide is a blast for kids of all ages!

One down side, we were talked into dinner at the golf club’s small restaurant. Nothing horrible, just not very interesting and not what we were expecting. Breakfast at Core Kitchen was very good and the setting is beautiful.

In the evening the fire pits are lit and the entire resort is aglow. Try to snag a seat by the fire, it’s the perfect way to have a drink and start or end your evening.

I've given very few hotels 5 stars, if I could give the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain 4.75, I would.
