“dont go to this hotel !!!!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2009

we arrived at the hotel at lunch time , looked fine untill we got to the room, it looked like a cell the rooms were discusting there was muck everywere , i new coming to turkey it would be basic as thats my 5th time but never have i seen anything like it , the staff dont speak english so its hard to find out information from them.
we didnt stay round the pool much as there was never any room as towels were put on earley.
breakfast was fine but as for dinner it was crap not much choice at all and not very nice .
i cut my foot on a tile in the bathroom and got a bit of blood on the bed sheet , not thinking anything of it when we came in from the beach we got told to go straight to reception they then put the bed sheet on the desk and demanded 200 tl for the bed sheet.i was angry and said no the manager then came and said it didnt matter.
we had no clean bed sheets on from the whole 10 days we was there we had no water for three days and no towels left for a week .
i wouln never go to this hotel ever again .

We arrived at the Blakaya hotel on a Saturday morning at 6am and was told there were no rooms at the hotel and we would have to go to another hotel for the day until the other guests had checked out. I felt a little sorry for the receptionsit as I feel her manager should have been there to deal with it and as a result was left to deal with the situation herself. This wasn't very easy for her as her English was not great and came across a little uncaring but I think this was the language barrier. They paid for the taxis of course.

We were sent to the Destan hotel in Hisaronu....thank god but please see the reviews of this for details.

We returned to the Balkaya around 4pm and was given a room. The TV did not work, the bathroom was filthy and the electrical point on the wall where u put the elecric key in fell of the wall. I thought we had stepped into hell and immediately wanted to return to the Destan.

We decided to have a look around but the space was so small and all of the sunbeds had been taken. the drinks were also very expensive and a local spirit and mixer was 10TL (£4). We had believed the hotel to be quiet and homely but it was noisy with lots of children and loud music playin all day and night.

The location of the hotel wasn't good either. It was a dusty dark walk to the main strip (or what there was of it) and we didn't feel very safe walkin to and from the hotel at night at all.

The breakfast was disgusting and served pink processed meat of some sort, cereal with warm milk and olives. We didnt stay for an evening meal so I can't comment but we left the next day anyway thankfully.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone unless you want to stay in a cramped, dirty hotel where you would have to fight to get a sunbed and walk 20 mins to get anywhere.

My mum and I booked this holiday through goingonholiday.com which we saw advertised on teletext holidays. We read the reviews, and as we are not fussy people, we thought we would give the hotel a go..... After booking the holiday I searched the internet and saw a review of goingonholiday.com where someone was complaining that they arrived at their hotel and there was no accommodation so they had to sleep on the managers sofa in his apartment on the first night. This worried use so I emailed the hotel to check whether they had received our booking and I received a very nice reply to say they had reserved a twin room, pool view for us..... phew!! Booking this hotel was BIG mistake, Firstly, I will explain the bad points (although at this moment I can not think of many good points):

1. On arrival at 10.30pm, we were greeted by reception with a warm welcome, the girl on reception asked us to wait 1 minute and then the manager appeared with her. He asked if we would like a drink.... 'wow', we thought, 'we are getting a very warm welcome to the hotel, free drink, this is nice'. The manager arrived with our drinks and sat with us in the reception area for small chit-chat, I thought this was a bit odd, 'whats going on', so after 5-10 mins I asked if we could be shown to our room. The manager at this point thought it would be a good idea to 'butter us up' and sat in between us with his arms around us (sleazy). He informed us he had made a mistake and there were no rooms available for us however, he would get the barman (who was sleeping on the sofa in reception area) to give us a lift to his sister hotel, Destan Hotel in Hisaronu and they would pick us up at 12 noon the following day. We didn't let this spoil the holiday and decided to let it go and enjoy our stay. The following day we were pick up at 1.30 and not 12 as they had said, then we were given an' upgrade' for the inconvenience to a family room. Well - I would have hated to have seen a standard room. The room looked as though the floor and stairs needed a good clean, and were very dated. The shower room was horrible, there was loads of hair in the plughole and the tap on the sink ran constantly, you couldn't turn it off. There was only a double bed so we asked at Reception if we could get twin beds, which they sorted for us.

2. On our 2nd day at this hotel we came back after being out all day on a boat trip to find we have no electric in our room. When we went to reception to inform them, we were told the manager would be at the hotel in 30 mins and to speak to him then. We were wanting to shower before our tea, however, decided to eat while we waited for the manager to show. He did not appear after 30mins so one of the other staff members tried to sort it and failed. We were told that we could move into another room but it did not have twin beds. We were assured that the electric would be sorted the following afternoon so asked whether we could use the room they were offering us to shower in that night only and sleep in our room with the double bed. They were not accepting this and were very rude and raised there voice to us, they explained that they would have to pay for a cleaner to come in as they needed a room for guests who were arriving the following day. I don’t think they quite understood, that they would still need a cleaner if we did move into the double bedded room as they would need to clean our 'no electric' room for the new guests. The management was very poor, he didn't seem to have any clue as to what time people were arriving/departing. Instead, they gave us 2 oil burners so we could see in our room..... this were useless, we could hardly see a thing.

3. The cleaner only made up our beds, not once did we get clean bed sheets our towels during our weeks stay. We had asked at Reception on several occasions for clean towels and never once got. We even left the towels on the floor one day, hoping the cleaner would understand that we required clean towels, and when we got back, all she had done was hang them up for us, you could still see my mascara marks on them, and the hole on the other towel that I had. Horrible!! I notice the review before this one said they got cleaned on a daily basis..... maybe ours didn't as they saw us as being 'awkward' which I don’t think we were being at all.

4. When sun bathing a guest had closed her room window and the glass shattered out onto the garden area. It took them 4 days to put new glass in and they even tried to charge her for the damage.

5. Do not take ice with your drinks.... the staff pick it up with their hands.... very nice!

6. At lunch time the service is so slow.... we watched a table of 5 wait for their food, they would come with 1 plate, then 5 mins later 2, than another 1 and then after around 15 mins from the 1st person being served the last person would get theirs. Not the way you want to eat. We had to wait 50 mins for 2 portions of chips, and there were only another 2 tables, it wasn't as thought the restaurant was busy.

7. Breakfast was ok, got a bit boring after a week, we never knew you could order omelettes, never saw anyone do this when we were there. Always had to ask for cups, water, cheese, bread etc. They ran out of teabags one morning. The restaurant was not air-conditioned as advertised on some websites, it was an open air (outdoor) restaurant and flies/wasps buzzed around the food.

8. Evening meal was repetitive, we only eat there twice, not very much for vegetarians.

9. The barman broke a glass when cleaning up around the pool area, and I assumed he cleared it away, but after a couple of hours I noticed it was still there, then a elderly lady noticed it and asked him to clear it up, which he did, but you'd think he would have done this straight away.

10. We were both wakened one night to a horrible sewage smell in the room, thankfully, after being out all day it had gone, I don’t know if they had problem with their sewage disposal or something?

11. When you first switched on the air-con a horrible fishy smell comes from it.

12. We were not the only guests to complain, there were constantly guests at reception complaining about something.

And the good:

1. The hotel is small and you get to know the other guests who all seemed to be really friendly.

And that’s about it, please do email if you have any questions. :)

We booked this holiday very last minute and read the reviews after booking and were absolutely petrified by what people had said (as this was our first holiday together for three years) - so much so that we rang our travel company to form a back up plan in case it lived up to its reputation. However, we gave it a chance and are so glad we did!
We thought we were in the middle of nowhere when the transfer took us down some rocky roads to get to the hotel but the next day we walked to the centre of town and it was only 15 mins away. On arrival, the staff were welcoming and friendly. We made an effort to get to know them and they did the same to us. They were always willing to help and couldn't do enough for us. We asked for things if we needed them and we always got what we asked for without it being a problem. They worked extremely hard (albeit a lot of the time they were just having fun, but that was very entertaining for the kids and adults sat around watching).
We spoke to the cleaner every day and she was very friendly and really enjoyed spending time with people that made the effort with her. We had our room cleaned every day and had the sheets and towels changed almost every day (I think there were two times when they weren't done) for the two weeks we were there. She put fresh flowers on the beds daily and would bring flowers to customers sat at the bar / around the pool.
The snacks on the food menu were great - always fresh and tasty. There were some complaints from customers about the a la carte menu in the evening. We were on a half board basis and enjoyed the food provided in the evening. It was basic but after talking to guests from other hotels, it became apparent that it was not dissimilar to what other hotels were serving (and these were 4* all inclusive hotels though). On some nights the food was fantastic, some nights it was average and on one ocassion we did not like the hot meals at all. We also ate out a couple of times but it was perfectly fine to eat there. There was one wasp trying to get on the salad once and the staff waved it away as soon as they saw it. Unfortunately in hot countries wasps breed and are attracted to food (as we all know!!!) - not much you can do apart from keep the food covered which this hotel did. We never saw ants on food or food covered in flies like other reviews have said. Staff were happy to make fried eggs or omlettes for breakfast which were always nice and fresh - you just need to ask for them (but they are free!!). Breakfast was always a struggle but just laugh it off and be prepared to wait for some things! We did need to ask for cups all the time and milk and beware...the kettle takes forever to boil!! It was always a hectic but entertaining start to the day!
The pool was fab and one of the best in comparison to the other hotels we went to. The music was banging all during the day around the pool and was some wierd techno trance type of thing!!! But we asked them to change it and gave them some ideas of what to put on instead which they down-loaded and put on the following day. After this they would revert back to their music but we just asked and gave more cjoices again and they changed it again!
The hotel was small and so everyone really got to know each other and we met some fantastic people there as a result. We spoke to people who had been there from before we arrived and they said the atmosphere the week before was very different but only because people were complaining all the time about everything. They found it made the place very uncomfortable. Whereas the people there around the time we were there were much more positive and laid back and just looked for good things during their holiday.
There were things that needed overlooking but on the whole it was a great experience. Realistically, you get what you pay for and don't expect too much from a 3* hotel - it's not 5*!!!! We saw how the staff could be less helpful and a little arrogant but it was always in response to customers being rude in the way they spoke to them and we would have been the same if people spoke to us like that in our country!
Bad parts:
- Do not have cocktails at the hotel - they are clearly watered down (but shorts aren't so they must have extra bottles somewhere!!!)
- If you don't like salad don't go half board as there is a lot of it!!!
- Pay as you go. We had a couple of bills and one of the expensive ones that we had paid for was placed on our room bill still (however, when we said we had paid it they took it off straight away without question). They did this to a few people so just be careful with bills. Always make sure you write paid on the bill yourself so there can't be any question.
Overall we had a fantastic holiday. The staff and other customers made our stay brilliant and we couldn't have asked for anything more from a cheap last minute holiday. We can understand why some people would not like it but if you are polite when you have an issue or asking for something, there is no problem. Also see the funny side of things sometimes. Staff were a little full on with my boyfriend (male staff seemed to have a thing for him!!) and it was a little uncomfortable at times but we just talked to other guests about it and it became a standing joke in the hotel. On departing the hotel (at 3 am) the staff came out to wave us goodbye and help us with our cases. They also gave us free drinks at the bar to bid us well and to give us chance for a final chat with everyone before going - it was a lovely end!

The Balkaya hotel, has a lovely pool area and reception. However the rooms need to be updated and the staff customer service levels are not good. Many customers during our stay were unhappy with the facilities.
However, i beliieve you get what you pay for and the price for the stay was certainely appealing.
Therefore strange that i totally enjoyed my stay here and would definately return. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was totally comfortable, the small size of the hotel, did mean that it was easy to get to know people too.

we arrived here for a 14 night stay on 18/07 at 5am in the morning. The music was blasting away and people were drinking at the bar seemingly having fun....we were too tired from our journey to join them....The music continued throughout the day and night for the full two weeks of our stay. Not a family friendly environment or a peaceful relaxing break! The reception staff and management were very rude, patronising and obnoxious individuals greedy for your money, they would charge you for the air that you breathe if they could!! They will try to put bogus charges on your room tab, be aware and keep a note of everything you order from the bar etc.. The AC was not free nor was the wifi, the food was very low quality and not much variety, it was always tasteless and usually raw., mainly lots of salads, limited fruit and no desserts ever. I recommend B&B here, not HB as you will regret it. If you want a base for sleeping only then it is cheap but not chearful, otherwise keep away. If you complain they are always ready to evict you, the rooms were not cleaned everyday, and our bedsheets were changed only once during the 14 nights and towels were not changed at all, when I asked for them to be changed, I was asked for extra money. They would not give me an extra bedsheet even though I asked several times!! I could not even pay for it, they just did not want me to have an extra bedsheet!! It was more like a prison camp than a hotel for paying guests!! If it was in my power I would take away their 3 stars and give them minus 10!! There are a series of free buses going to and from the beach, but the receptionists did not tell me on purpose, I found out by accident in the last few days of my stay!! We were not allowed to bring outside food or drink into the hotel as they wanted you to spend on their food which was overpriced and disgusting. we still sneaked stuff in though, I did not let them ruin our holiday, but I am so glad to be back home, places like this make you appreciate what you have!!

In Fethiya market they keep saying this item is a genuine fake and is therefore as cheap as chips. The Balkaya is as cheap as chips but with that comes some problems.

So the good, it has a great pool for a small hotel. I looked at a number of other hotels and it was one of the better ones. The family rooms, we had a 9 and a 19 year old were really large. I felt they were very good in that sense. The staff were very nice and some very helpful. The bar staff particulalry were good, yes the music can be loud but they are the heart and sould of the place and are very children friendly. For a small hotel they had 2 movie channles which was good.

The bad is the management by the owners. They sacked the manager, OK he was useless but he was with us less than 10 days and showed poor judgement in appointing him. They then sacked the cleaner who I thought was OK to leave the place without any cleaner for 3 days. (Our rooms had no towel change or sheets or anyhting for that matter for 5 days. When we arrived at 5am, there was no room to go to as they had not cleaned it, so we had to wait until after breakfast until 9am which was not great.

The ugly, owners tried to get money out of you, be it an alleged damage to propery, or for air conditioning, or for checking out late, even when you were owed that time. The food was poor but then you are not paying a lot. It was hard to see on one night the owners and managers being served with frsh barbeque while we had the normal guests food. You need to ask for bread, for glasses, for eggs to be cooked etc. It is not terrible just a hassle. One thing that was done well was the tranfers and the owner took direct responsibility for this and it worked well.

The area the hotle is located is fine, and it is a pretty place. I know a number of people were repeat visitors however they did not think they would come back again. I probably would not go back to the hotel but it was certainly no hell and we had a great holiday.

The trips you can book in Hisaronou which you can walk to, were fantastic. We went on 3 and they were all very good value for money. The best Ali Baba Jeep safari, great fun and you see some interesting sites. Dalyan highly recommended and the sea trips good as well.

There is no shuttle to the beach. The beach at Olu Deniz is not great I would recommend the blue lagoon instead. If you ask the hotel to ring up seahorse the restuarant will paick you up and take you back to the hotel. The prices are slightly more but not terrible. The sun beds are 6 TL for the day which is cheaper than the beach.

I loved Fethiye, the fish markey should not be missed. You choose your fish and the restaurant cooks it for you.

So all in all I would return to Turkey. If the manage, ment issues at the hotel are resolved I would return to the Blakaya. It certainly is no hell even now though
