“Karbel Hotel - Good choice in Olu Deniz”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2010

Our family have just returned from 10 nights at the Karbel Hotel (Bed and Breakfast) in OluDeniz and this was our second time at this hotel. Don't go for Half-Board option as there are loads of places to eat nearby. In our opinion, the breakfasts were poor. Mostly a Turkish buffet, breads, melon, eggs & cereals with occasional scrambled eggs & omlettes. Cold juice is nothing more than "squash" called "Tang" or fork out 6TL for fresh orange juice. Our feelings were that the quality of the breakfasts have been reduced in order to force guests to consider paying more for cooked breakfasts, beans on toasts etc, - all available of course but at an extra charge. Not really fair. We stayed in block 9D (9C last year), rooms 994,995 & 997 with small balconies and view of 2nd (quiet) pool and surrounding hills nr. lagoon. Very pleasant and west facing means cool in mornings Rooms were on the first/top floor so no noisy neighbours above!. Rooms are basic but have all you need. Clean, reasonably comfortable beds, small fridge and bathroom with sink, loo & shower. Air-con works and rooms cool down quite quickly. Take a cotton sheet if you like something smooth next to your skin at night. Towels & Bed linen are changed regularly. Maids should be tipped but dont get too friendly or they'll try to sell you an expensive shawl at end of holiday. Can leave a bad taste. The Karbel Hotel is quite modern, functional not plush, clean and most of the staff are very friendly. Uhammit was nice on reception. The Karbel Hotel is at the top of "the strip" but far enough away so noise isn't a problem. Outside noise from bars etc. stop at 12 by law anyway. The strip runs down to the sea (a 10 minute walk) and has a good range of shops selling clothing, handbags, jewellery, cash machines, doctors/pharmacy, supermarkets, restaurants and tour shops. Its a lot cheaper to book tours here rather than with your rep. Same tours and almost half price!
A great restaurant nr. sea is Cloud 9. Others include Buzz, Help & Toscana. Trips - we went to Ephesus & Pamukkale with Seaside - great value at around £45!! including a night away in another hotel. Saklikent Gorge is good fun though there was less water this year than last. Paragliding (off top of Mt. Babadag 6500feet up) is amazing! We went with Gravity. £40 for 40 mins. 45 mins ride to top in jeep is a bit hair-raising at very top. DVD and photos afterwards are a bit of a rip off and should be cheaper.
Fethiye Market or just for an evening stroll & meal nr. harbour (Try Pink Flamingo on waters edge) on the Dolmus (local bus for 4tl single) is good fun. Taxi more like 45TL. The next town Hisonaru is quite a nice day out for more shops and a bit of haggling and lively night life!
Swim in pool(s) or go down to sea. Great beach and waves. Sand v.hot. Bit pebbly when going in - buy beach/swim shoes 10-15TL. Lagoon is lovely. Best experienced by calling free courtesy bus and going to Billys Beach. Ask rep for number. Call from reception for 1TL. Look out for the turtles.
The supermarket outside the hotel is perfect for a 5ltr bottle of water for just 1.5TL - 55-60p! Water in the hotel is more expensive small bottle was 1.5TL.
The hotel has two pools one just outside the restaurent which we found quite noisy but the other one is behind block 5 and is much quieter and nicer. Both have poolside bars/toliets.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Karbel Hotel - we found it very good value for money, good central location - with a 10 minute walk to the beach, scenic views of the mountains and everyone was friendly.
Overall I would give the Hotel 7/10 or 8/20 to be fair and oh, Turkey is a beautiful place.

Back two days from a 10 day trip . booked with first choice and decided to add my view of the Karbel.
Overall would class this as a reasonable 3 star. In a good location at the top of the strip, Quite big now having taken over / merged with the White hotel. The benefit from this is you have two pools to choose from. The quieter pool was great and more child friendly. There was a snack bar which served various snacks / drinks etc. prices not too bad and food was ok. 7.5 tl for a burger, 6 TL for a few chips, 6 tl for a coke/sprite. 9tl for a chicken kebab.
We booked a room with balcony. Was very pleased that we weren't given a dungeon room after reading previous reviews. But didnt exactly get dizzy from the balcony as it was only 1 inch from the ground .....more like a patio. Very small area also The room was clean but very small. There was a TV , fridge , free airconditioning. A very nice power shower /bathrrom. The maid was excellent and if there is one person that deserved a good tip it was her.
Breakfast was standard , bread, cheese, olives , cucumber , tomatoes , salami, boiled eggs, sometimes scrambled. fruit juice, water melon coffee & tea. All ok and plenty to go around and set you up for the day. You could have a full english for an extra 10TL,
Having been to Turkey many times this was the first time we had to watch how much we were spending. Prices are similar to England. The card system used in the hotel to pay for drinks / food etc is good although probably a good idea to pay off your bill every few days as it mounts up !!! .
There are some fantastic restaurants in the resort and we enjoyed most of our meals. The only real dissappointment was Sultan Ahmets. This on trip advisor got great reviews. However without going into great detail was our worst meal / experience of the whole holiday.
Best buy in olu deniz had to be the large bottle of frozen water in the shop at the top of the strip opposite the karbel shop !!!! 1TL. The owner of the shop also gives probably the best rate to change your money. Karbel rate was 2.25 his rate was 2.31.
To summerise we had a fantastic time in this lovely resort. Met some friendly people and wish we were still there. It was very very hot and apparently getting hotter. The hotel is a great base and quite simply you can be as active or as chilled ....like us as you wish. Hopefully one day will return to Olu , Wont stay at karbel though as like to try different places. But if your after a reasonable hotel in great location then this is ideal. Enjoy.

The hotel Karbel is situated on the corner of a strip of shops, resturants and a few cocktail bars. It is a family resort and the strip is in no way too loud or boisterous or anything! 400metres along this and you're at the beach!!! It is slightly sandy and shigly, and a few foot in and its really deep, so be careful with little ones. There are free shuttle buses to the private beaches, Billys and Sugar Bay, reception will ring for you and the bus brings you back as well. The private beaches are on the famous blue lagoon are gorgeous, great for little ones, because the water is really shallow. The sundbeds are about 5 turkey lira so really reasonable. They also have cafes, toilets and showers.

Back to the Karbel, the rooms were on the small size, however we saw rooms bigger than ours so you may be lucky. Basic bathroom, fridge and small balcony, but too be honest there is so much to do, you'll hardly be there.

The hotel has two pools, the bigger was is normally busier and louder but both are nice, only downside was they were deep, but they did have a baby pool (which my 6 yr old refused to go in).

We went BandB because people said it was so cheap to eat out, it is not!! On average, you looking £10 each per meal, and they sting you for pop, £2.50 for a large coke!! Where big bottle at the supermarket, is £1.50.

There are loads and loads of excursions, really cheap. £5 for boat trip with free meal, sting you for drinks again though!! have to do the jeep safari!! excellent¬

We are due to stay at The Karbel hotel this September . this will be our third time there . We have also had ana excellent time at the hotel . The rooms are always kept spotlessly clean by the cleaners and they will decorate your bed with flowers towards the end of your holiday . We had stayed in block 3 and 9 .

Breakfast is basic but we had it most mornings . It kept us going until later in the day . I recommend that you take a travel kettle so that you can make a drink in your rooms . It was good to have a fridge in your room . Air conditioning is a must as it gets very hot .

There are numerous restaurent to choose from at night - our favourites were secret garden , Captain Hooks , oba motel and the chinese near the beach .

Drinks are expensive especially shorts . We have also been on a number of trips whilst on holiday . We booked with Seaside Tours . My son went paragliding and after alot of research chose Sky sports - more expensive but good reputation .

Looking forward to going back this Sept -our first wedding anniverary . Hope to get the same room we had last year . I hope the hotel has not changed from last year .

The location of the Karbel is very good at the top of the main strip down to the beach, we stayed with our 10yr daughter and the room was too small for the 3 of us, the beds were very uncomfortable, but very clean. We felt let down by Thomson as when we booked we spoke to a Thomson advisor and she was able to confirm that as we booked a balcony we would not be on the ground floor as we had a bad experience before ( not here ). Also 2 weeks before we left we emailed the rsesort team and asked them to confirm with hotel that we would not be on ground floor , again all confirmed that as we booked a balcony all's fine! I'm sure you know what happened we were given a room on ground level with a "balcony" 3inches off the ground which we would class as a terrace asked to be moved that night told to go to reception in the morning. Spoke to our rep who tried her best but was told we could move on Monday this was Friday and as we didn't want to live out of our cases we left it and unpacked very disappointed and let down, that afternoon we were told we coud move Saturday but they couldn't guarantee our room and it may be smaller than what we had and as i've said our room was already to small for 3 and as we had unpacked we left it.The hotel uses a card system for paying for snacks and drinks which we paid up twice during our 11 night stay, just to keep a check on it as its's very easy to over spend as we found the prices very similar to here.We were half board and there was a salad section which was the same everynight, a different soup each night and 2 different main meals so not much choice, nothing for vegetarian option or children, our daughter isn't a fussy eater but if your children are there is no children friendly options. The desserts were very poor and the fresh fruit every night was just melon. The breakfast was basic turkish, ok for a few mornings, but very boring, but we did no this. The biggest disappointment for us was the blue lagoon beach we read that this is one of the 5th best beaches in the world, why ? The sunbeds are so crammed in and it's very stoney one poor women was very distressed, she couln't get out the water as it was so very steep and your feet kept sinking into the stones. We also went to Sugar Beach which was disappointing too, the water was stagnant and our daughter felt ill after our visit. We chose 3 trips, the market and ghost town one, 12 island boat trip and jeep safari and we enjoyed everyone. We booked the 12 island boat trip with Thomson before we left and was amazed how much cheaper we could of got it at the resort with the same trip company Thomson use, over half! THe jeep safari was a good day out we all enjoyed it and also bought the cd as a reminder of our day which was also very good. We ate out a few times when we didn't like what was on the menu in hotel, we went to Anfora and the Magic Garden which were recommended on trip advisor and both very good. We also had a taxi transfer to and from the airport which was brilliant we booked this through Thomson and would do this again. This was our 1st time to Turkey and we all really enjoyed it and Olu Deniz is a very nice resort hardly any hasseling from anyone which was a real bonus, having said that i don't think we would come again.

This was our second visit to this hotel and it was just as good as the first time. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. Nothing is a problem for them and they are always cheerful even at the end of a long shift. We stayed here in October 2008 with a few other members of the family and friends as our son and daughter-in-law were getting married at the Blue Lagoon. We had a lovely room overlooking the smaller pool which seemed to be one of the newer refurbished ones. Because of its location there was no noise of people passing etc. Didn't even hear the mosque this time!! Totally relaxing.
The resort itself is just so nice. Quiet by day but comes alive at night. We had a walk to the Blue Lagoon and hired a sunbed while we were there so did a bit of swimming there too. A handy tip is to wear sandshoes for going into the water as it is very pebbley!! We had a day trip to Rhodes on the hydrofoil from Fethiye which took us 3 hours instead of 2 as the sea was choppey. They allowed us an extra hour on Rhodes to make up for this which was excellent. Would thoroughly recommend this as the Old Town is really worth seeing. We just spent the whole of our time in there. Loads of small cobbled streets with shops gallore and you can walk round what would have been the moat. We also did a couple of boat trips which were excellent value for money. Those we booked through one of the tour operators on the strip, much cheaper!! We also went to Talk of the Town in Hisaronu before we left. If you want a night out with a good laugh this is thoroughly recommended!!
