Just returned from Olu Deniz yesterday and stayed a week at the Blue Lagoon half board and was the biggest mistake I have ever made. My wife and I usually go all inclusive, however as this was a suprise booking for her I could not afford to go all inclusive on this occasion.
Arrived at the hotel about 10:30pm and a night man was there to show us to our room, and took our cases. When he opened the door, it struck us how basic and grotty the room was...clean but in need of major refurbishment, cracked bathroom tiles, very stiff locks on all the doors, and to top it off the toilet leaked when flushed. Complained to reception and true to their word it was fixed in the morning.
RIGHT NOW TO MY REAL ISSUE OF THE HOTEL... When you book half board i expected breakfast and dinner, however this is not the case...Breakfast is very turkish and continental, and the only hot food is a slice of toast and a hard boiled egg. There is a sign on the wall which states if you are feeling hungry then have a full english...FOR 13TL!!! As i have spent alot going half board why should you pay? I would seriously say walk 30 seconds down to the strip and get the same breakfast for 5 Lira.
And now for the dinner. They have two blackboards, one is the food in the restaurant that night and the other you have to pay...First night of dinner, very turkish salads and the only luke warm food was rice, pasta and a chicken piece in a sauce. Once again it was luke warm, hardly suitable for my pregnant wife!!! But the good menu consisted of currys, steak etc at obsurd prices.
The staff at the hotel we found to be quite rude, and as for George, the worlds famous blue lagoon George, lets just say he likes the people he likes!! He barely made any effort with us, he could only just manage to mutter under his breath to us... Yes he walked around offering a couple of scoops of ice cream in a glass but 7lira?? The prices are crazy...
From the second morning to the last lunch we out every morning and night, and trust me when a say there are some stunning restaurants on the strip.
Disappointed in the thomas cook advisor because she really couldnt see my point of view, and her local knowledge didnt seem that great either. When asking her about a great sandy beach she told us sugar beach next to the lagoon, so 10 Lira in a taxi and when i saw it my face dropped, the thinnest layer of sand so your walking on hard ground, and the water I wouldnt let a dog swim in...The best i can describe this is a green lake!!! THIS PLACE IS DISGUSTING!!!!
The lagoon aint bad, however it aint as glamourous as the pictures. Very pebbley but the water is clear blue, you have to pay 4.50Lira each to get in there.
If you do an excursion then the 12island boat trip is relaxing and amaing. And if you are looking for a great night out then talk of the town is a must. Its a drag show but hilarious from start to finish.
If you are looking for a great evening meal then Sultan Ahmet at the end of the strip and just round the corner from that is the plaza. Lovely meal and romantic setting watching the sun set over the mountain.
One word about the locals who try to get you into their restaurant, we found some to be very forceful and ignorant towards us, to the point we were having to ignore them. In one bar he even raised his voice to us when we walked past, very rude!!!
Would I go back to turkey? Not if I could help it
Would I go Olu Deniz? Probably not, there will be better places
Would I reccommend Blue Lagoon Hotel? Never in a million years!!
Go to the turquoise hotel opposite or the balechan hotel delux which backs onto the blue lagoon, they looked far better!!!!!
Try and get one of the new rooms, they looked alright...
