This was the third time I have been to Turkey and the second time in Olu Deniz. Hope this review is helpful !
Olu: The main draw to go to Turkey and Olu Deniz? The weather...2 weeks in August, only one day with some cloud. Always hot. This could be a problem for some, I know, but not us :) So, a great escape from the British August Summer (or lack of it) and of course Turkey is a reasonable price all year round. There are so many places to eat in Olu as well (I recommend the Buzz Beach Bar, Madras, Bello and Gusto, Mustabi in particular!) and a few duds (the Turkish place to the right of Bello and Gusto) and Harrys, although the bar/club on the roof top is great!). The beach area is lovely, the lagoon also, and there are so many excursions to choose from (we did kayaking on the Xanthos river, paragliding, boat trip around the coastline of Olu, Pamukale and Ephesus and a day trip to Rhodes...if you want to know about any of these, let me know!).
The Hotel (Asena Beach): the hotel is quite large by Olu standards. It's clean and well looked after. Rooms are not very large, but comfortable and clean with either balcony or terrace. Three rooms over look the main street, opposite 2 noisy karaoke bars and believe me, there seriously is no point trying to go to sleep before 1am. I can sleep through most things, but not 2 karaoke bars (remembering everyone is outside). If you have a room near the pool, you also will not sleep until late as the hotel has entertainment most nights. So all the reviews you read about noise....they are spot on. It is fine if you like really late nights, not if you don't. I'm somewhere in the middle, but it has to be the noisiest hotel I have EVER stayed in.
Having said this, the hotel does look lovely and it almost feels like a village with little streets, outdoor restaurant / bar etc. If you think there is a "lake" in the hotel (as it shows in all the pics), it's not there any more...filled in and made into outdoor seating for restaurant. I spent ages trying to find it until I realised all the pics on the internet are out of date! Oops!
The staff...they will do anything for you. This is obviously most people's idea of the best service. However, some of the bar staff and a couple of the waiters just don't leave you alone. Great if you want to prop up the bar and get wrecked with them, then have them sit at your table at breakfast, lunch , dinner, but really REALLY annoying if you want a bit of family time or if they keep pestering, say, your sister and niece, which is what they kept doing. My 17 yo niece was a bit put out about one waiter who kept on and on...he was offended that she wasn't interested and told me she wouldn't get work in Turkey because she was too fat. Nice.
However, if you like really boozy, loud, lively hotels with overly attentive male staff, this is the place to be. But again, lovely looking hotel and perfect location for the beach which is a few mins walk away.
Hope this was useful....it is as honest as it gets!
