“Wonderful hotel in a quaint fishing village”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2009

We stayed at the Focantique for only one night at the end of May and we should have stayed longer. When we arrived we were courteously greeted and showed to a tastefully furnished room in the old stone Greek house with a sea view. Most rooms don't have a sea view but we were lucky. The room was a little small but quiet, air conditioned and (unusual in Turkey), the windows had screens. I saw another review where people complained of mosquitoes but I can't understand this. Not only were there screens on the windows, there was mosquito netting-like curtains to cover the windows and an air conditioner if you didn't want to open the windows at all. So the only way you'd get mosquitoes would be to leave the door open. At least this was true of our room and the others I observed, but I didn't see them all.

After arriving we went to the beach across the street from the hotel and the hotel staff, observing us, brought us towels and beach chairs. Very thoughtful. The beach is small and there are stones mixed with the sand. However, there are piers to swim off to avoid having to walk on the stones. Foca is really more of a fishing village than a beach resort, but it worked out fine for us.

The town is wonderful. Unlike so many of the overly touristed towns on the Aegean coast, it's a real town where real people fish and make a living. It was probably the most atmospheric town we stayed in on the Aegean coast. We ate at a small restaurant a short walk from the hotel and, although there were a few tourists, there were not many and the prices were very reasonable. We observed locals with families walking by, chatting and enjoying the fine weather. It's a truely charming little fishing village. Also, there are boat tours to the surrounding islands if you're staying longer. I strongly recommend both the town and the hotel.

We enjoyed our ten days at this self-styled boutique hotel in the pretty seaside town in Foca, around 70km from Izmir. Our room in an old stone building, though small, was well equipped, with very good air conditioning, satellite TV installed while we were there, a reasonable en suite, tea and coffee and attractive decor. A nice breakfast buffet is included, and the hotel serves nice evening meals and drinks in their seafront bar. The back of the hotel is more attractive than the unprepossing facade, so don't be disappointed upon arrival that the website image is not immediately apparent. The owners, the Alemdoroglu family, are charming and extremely helpful: the hotel arranged our airport transfers for €60 and a driver to take us on a day trip to Ephesus. Discounted rates apply for long stays and cash payments. One downside: come prepared to ward off a few mosquitoes, Foca itself has few westerners and is a sleepy sort of place, but popular with Izmir families and boasts well over a dozen restaurants, many of them serving splendid fish as well as kebabs along the harbour front. The town has plenty of daytrips by boat to visit the Siren rocks and pass an island said to resemble the great Turkish leader Kemal Ataturk when viewed from the correct angle. Although there is a small and very busy town beach, the best place to enjoy the seaside is at the nearby Hanedan resort - involving a YTL1,50 dolmus - minibus - ride and a YTL10 admission charge for non-residents, which includes umbrellas generous enough to give proper shade to two. There are excellent beach cafes, with a tented traditional version offering fresh pancakes and spa treatments available in the hotel. Restaurants we particularly liked were the Zeytin near our hotel; the Fokai, slightly hidden high above the yachts and boats in the main harbour; and for fish, the Mozaic Balik. The town also boasts a small hammam with efficient scrubs and massages.
