Impressive remains of medieval castle and convent. Very extensive space to visit with outstanding views of the countryside.

“One of Portugal’s Wonders!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

No wonder this site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Portugal's Seven Wonders. Convento de Cristo is a religious and Roman Catholic building, originally a Templar stronghold built in the 12th century. After the Order of the Knights Templar was dissolved in the 14th century, the Portuguese branch of the order was turned into the Knights of the Order of Christ, which supported Portugal's maritime discoveries of the 15th century.
The exterior and interior architecture of the Convent is totally impressive and the Round Church is an absolute jewel. The castle and Convent of Christ have examples of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance architectural styles.
The admission fee is 6 euros, but if you intend to visit the rest of the UNESCO sites nearby, which is highly recommended, it’s worth it if you purchase the combined ticket of 15 euros that allows entrance to these 3 sites (Alcobaca Monastery, Batalha Monastery and Convent of Christ). At Alcobaca’s ticket booth they accept credit card payments.

A wonderful place to visit. Lots of history and the convent is amazing. Very Portuguese with lovely blue and white tiles in some of the rooms.

“Exceptional building”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This building could be used as a movie set with original kitchens vast corridors, courtyards and aquaduct. Don't be deceived by the exterior as the history and condition of the building will impress.
