We live near Tomar and have visited this cafe/restaurant every 3 or 4 weeks for the last 3 years. We have never had a bad meal, or come away hungry. There is nothing fancy on the menu and the interior isn't "posh" so perhaps not for that "special occasion".
There is a basic menu, but every day there are 3 or 4 "meals of the day" on a board outside.
It is open lunchtime and evenings, and on Sundays, but often not till after 7pm (despite sometimes saying 6pm on the door!).
The vitela is a favourite and always tender and in a sort-of gravy - which is more than some more expensive places can manage. Roast duck is another good dish. They always have a choice of fish. All served with chips, rice and salad, though we usually say "no rice". Half portions (which are certainly plenty, especially if you eat the bread and a sweet) are around 5.50 - 6€ and a full portion is about 7 - 8€. Wine is about 2.30 a half litre (I say "about" as being regulars we get it a bit cheaper!) and very pleasant. Sweets are 1.50.
We find the TV a bit intrusive, but sadly the Portuguese cannot bear to do without it! You can move to a further table to get away from it or even sit outside. Also do not go here if you are in a rush because the owner never is! However, we enjoy the feeling of not being rushed over our meal.
