“Very special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2012

Un posto magico nella sua simplicità.
A very special place.
As Sr. António (the tower guard) to explain you all about it, and a simple church will reveal some of it’s magic.

“Templar Church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2011

This church was built in the XII century under the leadership of D. Gualdim Pais, Master of the Order of the Knights Templar in Portugal. It was used as the Templar pantheon for the Knights of Tomar. After the Order was extinct throughout Europe, in Portugal, all its churches and castles reverted to newly created Knights of the Order of Christ, which succeeded the Templars in Portugal. D. Gualdim Pais is buried in this church.
Santa Maria do Olival, under the Order of Christ, became the See of all churches in the Portuguese Maritime empire.
When you visit, in the original parts of the church built under D. Gualdim Pais, pay attention to the use of the number 8. You walk into the church by going down 8 steps, 8 windows, 8 columns, etc...Have fun!
