“What a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

Pension Bicuar was an oasis! We arrived after a very wet entry to the Algarve from Lisbon. What struck us most about this pension was the friendliness and homeliness of the hosts, and in the way that they encouraged use of the hotel. Our room was delightful and we looked out onto the street and street life. Outside our room were armchairs and upstairs was a dining area and kitchen where we could prepare food and even cook . Our tour group used this space to have a break from eating out and had some communal meals together, and enjoyed some great chats with the host. Great view from the terrace. A bonus was that he was an expat from Australia! He was so relaxed and helpful. The pension is well located with the waterfront, market and supermarket only minutes away. Highly recommended.

We stayed at this lovely guest house for a couple nights in September. Room was very clean and situated in the middle of everything. Jeff the guy running it was super helpful and the view from terrace is the best backdrop while having breakfast. We reccomend this guesthouse,

Olhao is a no-frills Algarve location, optimal to explore nature and beaches of the Ria Formosa national park. This Pension is a good fit to the town. It is near the main square but within the pedestrian area. If you have a car without GPS, look for parking in the main street a few blocks away. The staff are very friendly and live on premises. The roof terrace is nice, a shared kitchen is available with all meals on a self-catering basis. The furniture in common spaces does have a special taste. Not all rooms have WC, there is one close to the reception desk. Our family room was tiny with basic furniture and shower with no WC, with one double loft bed and two single bunk beds. If I stretched my arm out of the window I could shake hands with the neighbours across the lane: a touch of real life Given the setting I found the room a bit overpriced. The manager requests cash payment at and the day after check-in, no credit cards (ATM on the main street at few minutes' walk).

We stayed here on our honeymoon and found the place charming. Room on 2nd floor with kitchen available on 3rd floor and rooftop tables open to use. Reasonably priced and owner spoke English and was very friendly! Always love a free breakfast which this place did not have and there was no immediate street parking nearby and VERY difficult for us to find. That being said, would book it again in an instant because it was clean, budget friendly for the coast of Portugal and met our needs!

Clean, simple and perfectly situated a couple of minutes walk from the largest covered markets in the Algarve, the Pension Bicuar was the perfect place from which to explore the streets and fishing port of Olhao. Run by the irrepressible Jeff and his family this beautiful, unassuming hotel was full of charm and fantastic value for money. Guests at the hotel have the use of a kitchen to store and prepare food with a roof-top terrace with seating, tables and a barbeque with lovely views across the flat roofs of the old town towards the sea. After a long day visiting the nearby islands by ferry or local restaurants to eat fresh fish it was a treat to sit with a glass of the local wine watching the sun set over Portugal. Jeff was a brilliant host with a wealth of information about the local area and a sincere desire to make us feel welcome and help us get the most out of our visit. We loved our stay and will undoubtedly return in the future. Decent, honest and a special place to come back to.

Room Tip: Our room on the front of the building had a balcony overlooking the street below.

I can't speak highly enough of the pension bicuar. It has the beauty of a two star price and attitude with a five star experience. This is not the 5 stars of the Hong Kong Hilton with 10 different types of pillows and suited butlers on call, but of a real and relaxing style of life. There is nothing better to enjoy than a white wine on the rooftop terrace and marvel at the view of Olhao in the evening light. Although the toilets are shared, this actually presents no problem as they are always perfectly clean and each room has its own shower. There are also cooking facilities and a barbecue available, which makes for a perfect home style meal after a few weeks of traveling! It's also great just to have access to a kettle and a fridge for your drinks. This hotel has more of a home stay feel than anything else, and all things permitting I will definitely be coming back.

The 2 star pension is run by lovely staff who do a great job providing small, clean and simple rooms. It has 3 floors and a nice terrasse on the top with a breathtaking view over the city. Showers inside the rooms, WC located on each floor. 100m away from the main avenue which runs along the seaside. Noise coming from the streets at night.

A perfect spot for backpackers or couples staying in town for 1 night or 2 and who are not looking for luxury. Prices are fair.
