“Cosy, well located & low cost”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

The 2 star pension is run by lovely staff who do a great job providing small, clean and simple rooms. It has 3 floors and a nice terrasse on the top with a breathtaking view over the city. Showers inside the rooms, WC located on each floor. 100m away from the main avenue which runs along the seaside. Noise coming from the streets at night.

A perfect spot for backpackers or couples staying in town for 1 night or 2 and who are not looking for luxury. Prices are fair.

We (mature couple) spent two nights here in July '12, and wish it could have been more. A great location, lovely room and fantastic roof terrace. Jeff's welcome and enthusiam were great, so were his recommendations for food and flamingo spotting! All in all a great stay!

Room Tip: You pay a bit more for the en suite room, but its in the best place in the building and of course a...

Our stay at this pension was great from the get-go! Jeff, the extremely friendly owner, greeted us and showed us to our room. We had told him in advance that it was our honeymoon, so were delighted to see some champagne in the room when we got there. Following that Jeff spent a good 20-30 minutes talking to us about what to do in town, how to get around, and potential day trips in the area. The pension itself is quite charming, with a very peaceful rooftop eating area with great views of the water and the town. Overall, we were very happy with our stay at this pension!

Smallish rooms are amply compensated by the tasteful décor (reminiscent of Portuguese pensões of yore) as well as the magnificent, flowery terrace overlooking all of Olhão and a part of the Ria Formosa. You can cook a meal or just hang out: the place had a very relaxed feel to it and it was easy to meet other guests simply due to the fact that the terrace was so amenable.

Jeff, the owner, is a good host: not only did he make us feel at home right off the bat (and we were a late arrival) but he also took the time to inform us of what was happening in Olhão, where one could go out for a good eat, and even the timetables of the boats that take you to one of the many lovely island beaches on the outer strip of the Ria Formosa (Armona, Culatra, or Farol).

Be advised of the local festivities in June (São João), which fill some streets in Olhão and generally mean that a lot of loud music will be pumping until at least 2.00 AM on one weekend (this year it was the 22nd/23rd) For us this was not a problem at all, as we were more than happy to go out and join the party after indulging in some of the excellent sea-food the town has to offer, but guests craving some peace and relaxation may be put off.

Even though, coming from a strictly Portuguese perspective, Pensão Bicuar is more expensive than a traditional pensão, we felt that it was still good value for money, and we will be entertaining a return visit. This is what a pension should be like.

Again, thank you very much for the stay, Jeff!

Room Tip: It's never too much to remind that some rooms have en-suite facilities and some do not. While th...

Geoff and Leonie were absolutely wonderful hosts. You can see that there experience over many years in the hospitality industry gives them that friendly and welcoming edge. A wonderful stay, and the terrace is just fabulous. Thank you......Trish and Dean.

I stayed there for 2 days. Very friendly and co-operative staff. They even speak english which is very much necessary for any kind of help for we travelers in portugal. Very very clean and tidy room. Clean sheets and bed. No noise in the property. They provide free internet, kitchen, dining hall and even a terrace to relax. Location is very close to the bus stop there. They helped me in finding the good places to visit there. I would suggest people to go there. I was impressed.

Room Tip: second and third floor is preferred
