We saw the reviews on TripAdvisor and had to check it out for ourselves - and aren't we glad we did. We didn't stay at the Homestay, but we went to The Hot Dog Shop. It doesn't open until about 10.00am (Bali Time), and we had to grab a coffee at another restaurant and go back later. Well, it was an education in itself. The place isn't very big and only has about 5 tables, but it always has many customers sitting drinking and eating. If there isn't a free table, Gary (mine host) gets a couple of extra chairs and seats you with anyone who has a place at their table. He makes the initial introductions, and soon everyone knows everyone else, and the atmosphere is alive with conversation, laughter, and friendship. We've never experienced anywhere so lay-back and relaxed - it was wonderful.
The girls who prepare the food seem to be magicians, as they can prepare really good, fresh, tasty, and attractive meals, cooked on very basic cooking equipment. And it is done right there, before your very eyes, so you can see that everything is fresh and properly done - not hidden away somewhere, where dubious practices are used.
Gary entertains the customers with merry banter, and a few risque stories, and is an incredibly affable person who can hold an interesting conversation with anyone. It takes a very intelligent person to do this, even though he like to come across as a sort of Basil Fawlty. He is a great guy.
The beer is very cold (almost icy), as is the Bali Cider - a very nice "appley" drink (if you like cider. He also offered us a "Bintang Radler", which is a sort of shandy, ready made. It was extremely nice and refreshing, if you wanted a low alcohol drink.
Thanks Gary, we'll see you on our next holiday - even if we don't stay in Candi Dasa, your shop and your burgers are worth a day trip from Sanur.
A terrific place to go to - give it a try.
