In the month of September, 2013, just two days before, we (a group of about 20 people) needed to stay for 1 night (26th)/ 2 nights (26th & 27th) in the Sun Village for business meeting. This hotel was chosen by the organising body. The first shock came when on the previous night, when I was checking the distance between the airport and the hotel, which is about 45 KM. The pre-paid taxi rate for this hotel from the airport is Rs.1000/- for non-a/c car and Rs.1150/- for a/c car. It takes about one hour to reach this hotel from the airport.
The checking-in process on 26th afternoon was smooth. The buffet lunch that followed was so so. The taste of the food was average (this refers only to veg food, as I am a vegetarian). The soup and the deserts were better than the main course. Then our conference / meeting started. The room was little congested with 2 columns / pillars coming in between. But the a/c, projector, audio system were good. There was no toilet near this conference room. The cookies, tea & coffee served during the course of the meeting were good.
My room was located in the second floor, which one has to reach through stair case (no lift is available. There was one more floor above my room, I believe). The room was big enough and spacious. The room was equipped with a/c, sofa, cable TV, coffee maker, table, chair & wardrobe. All were performing to the satisfaction. The TV has been fixed in front of the sofa (not in front of the cot like in the hotel at Mangalore), making it comfortable to sit and view. The mattress and pillow were good and gave good quality of sleep in the night. There is a balcony attached to the room. Part of the swimming pool was seen from this. Otherwise there was no special view from here. The bathroom was little cramped (may be due to the column in the shower area) and dully lit. Essential toiletries have been provided. The rain shower was excellent with enough pressure and hot water to rejuvenate oneself. But the pressure in the wash basin was poor. No mat / foot towel has been provided on the bathroom floor. That was making it bit slippery on the floor with wet legs, after the bath. The house keeping was ok, but needs to be much more careful. In one of the cups kept for making own tea / coffee, I found a bunch of human hairs on the second day.
For the night a special area was marked for our cock tail and dinner. The area was good adjacent to the swimming pool. The bar was serving good. The snacks served were to the minimum. The food was, again, of average taste. The desert was better.
The next day morning breakfast was better. Not of much variety, but one can manage with fruits, bread toast, omelette, butter & jam. Post morning session the second day’s lunch was better than the previous day. The hotel had arranged a van for us to go around the place in the afternoon. One of the greatest advantage of this property is that it is very close the Baga beach, which is less crowded as compared to other beaches of Goa. On the second day also we had the cock tail & dinner in the same place like the previous day. Today the snacks served were much better (as if compensating for the shortage of the previous day). The dinner and desert were also better than the earlier day.
The hotel was lacking totally on the need of the customers, especially with their location in a faraway place. As we (about 7 seven of us) were to catch our flight around 7.30 Am on the next day. This means, we have to reach the airport by 6.30 Am after travelling for one hour. This leads to the situation that we must leave the hotel atleast by 5.30 AM. Therefore we were requesting the front office to arrange for a van at 5.30 AM to drop us all. That was turned down on some excuse like the driver is not available in the early morning. Then we requested to arrange two taxies for us. For this we were replied that the guests have to talk to the taxi providers / operators directly. Somehow that was done by our participants. Finally we suggested that the front office settle our bills in the night itself; as we all have to leave early morning at 5.00 / 5.30 AM and also the rates are all predetermined and agreed by the organizer. This was also turned down for whatever reason known to them. On the next day morning there were 8 guests to check out at around 5.00 -5.15 AM. The two gentlemen at the front office were totally incompetent to handle the front office. They could not take the print out of the bills. They were struggling to take the payments by cards and issued just receipts to us. In the middle, they were spending time to search the paper roll for the credit card terminal. It was fortunate that first batch of 4 of us could able to leave the hotel at 5.30 AM and reached the airport at about 6.30 AM. I am yet to talk to the rest of the participants, who left in the morning, to know about their fate that day.
This hotel has lot of scope to improve. If they attend to their short comings, they may be able to do much better.
