“Great value and excellent style”

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice

Jan 28, 2008

We stayed in this fabulous hotel for 2 nights in June 2007 and couldn't fault it. The attention to detail was excellent with touches like a glass of fruit juice as you check in, and a pin-code safe in the bedroom. The room was amazing with a really comfortable king-size bed and a view of Table Mountain that was difficult to tear myself away from. I loved the shower which had a floor-to-ceiling window into the bedroom!

Breakfast in the restaurant was excellent, as was the room service and especially the cocktails!

Didn't get to try out the climbing wall on the days we were there, but it looked very impressive.

The staff were very helpful in organising taxis and recommending places to visit etc.

What a pleasant experience! We stayed at this hotel (now the Protea Fire & Ice) for 4 nights leading up to Christmas. It was at the tail end of our South African holiday and needed something comfortable and well-suited for our needs. This place met them.

Number 1, the service was impecible! I'm a stickler for hotel service. Having spent many years in the industry, I look for it and expect it. It is obvious that this hotel company and the management values excellent guest service. They delivered. I LOVE when employees remember me and call me by name. We were ALWAYS greeted with kind smiles and service. From reption, to the restaurant, the bar, to transportation, everyone made us feel very welcome. Thank You!

The design was well planned and comfortable. Often times hotels try to go trendy and hip and end up looking overdone or cheap. Not this place. The design is hip and quality. And...with a nice sense of humor.

Price/Value it was worth it. The room was comfortable and necessary for our tour days. Upkeep and housekeeping is excessive...but they do it with ease.

The Pool...is odd. I would have loved to swim but its difficult to relax with restaurant patrons watching you. Also...my only issue was the bar staff was sometimes not as attentive as everyone else.

Regardless, they delivered. The location is a little sketchy but we never felt unsafe. The hotel provided us with gracious transportation and quick service. They're hired cars are a little more than taxi's but the service and speed was impressive.

Good Job!

“Great Hotel”

Protea Hotel Fire & Ice

This is a great hotel really hip and trendy and I would recommend it to anyone looking to stay in Cape Town. I spent 12 nights their and would go back and use the hotel again when I visit Cape Town.I wanted an adrenalin holiday and was able to arrange all my trips via the hotel as they recommended Gavin Pfister of Xtreme Adventures.
The service I got was better than any of the hotels I have used in the UK! The food was excellent (pumpkin a pleasant surprise) and I would tell anyone to try a speciality burger and round it off with a milkshake for dessert! Yes for dessert.
Rooms are clean and modern with plasma tv and Bose radio alarm.I was also able to use my laptop as the rooms have WI-FI but you need a daily code from reception. The pool at the hotel is one lane wide and is not something I would use, more "we have a pool" for advertising. The toilets are real nod to the design team who worked on this hotel and are something you remember and may even photograph!
I stayed on my own at the hotel and had no problems getting around either walking or by taxi.
The only small complaint I made on checking out was the bar staff are really slow at giving you your change back. When I got back to the UK I had an email from the general manager, he had forwarded me my comment card which had also been sent to all the hotel staff, thanking me for my good review and also for highlighting the small issue I had.
If you are going to Cape Town then this is a great hotel good value for money, good food and the staff are superb. Fire and Ice has my vote.

“The Best Breakfast in Town”

My wife and I stayed in this boutique hotel for 5 nights in November 2007. Despite the cheesy and somewhat dated extreme sport theme, this is a great hotel which is perfectly situated in City Bowl close to all the action. The service is beyond fantastic and we truly felt special at this funky establishment. The rooms are very modern with flat screen TVs and all other bells and whistles. The breakfast, which was included in the room rate, was really first rate and in fact the best we've ever had at a hotel. Overall, I have nothing to complain about when it comes to Extreme Hotel, and I highly recommend it.

Extreme Hotel is a very hip and cool hotel. It is very new and the facilities are very well thought of. Staff are extremely friendly and fun, although they do not necessarily provide the best informed concierge service around. Advice would be to double check online or with someone else, but not with Downtown Adventures down the road.

The rooms are very cool - with an open concept shower. The fittings are expensive. The inroom LCD and bose sound system are cool. However, I think they've compromised size for cool - the rooms are a tad squeezy - I kept bumping into things. Toiletries are typical Protea, so don't expect anything out of the ordinary.

All in, I'd say this is a glorified 3 star hotel, nice and modern but with no facilities. Location is good but I think it's a little pricey for what it offers.

The hotel makes excellent milkshakes, do check out the toilets on the ground floor - very cool! The restaurant's got good burgers too. However, if you can be bothered, you're better off taking that 5 min walk down to Royale which has the best burgers in Cape Town.
