3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

The hotel is located at a busy crossroad. The tiny pool was, although the weather was nice, covered and could not be used. The first day internet did not work and since it was a Sunday, could not be fixed until the next day. Very positive though: we received the complimentary upgrade promised by the Gold Card for the first and only time without asking or insisting. The deluxe room was clean and nice with a bedroom on a "duplo" floor. The restaurant is good without being great.

Protea gold card holder that is very dissapointed. Checked in at 16h00, notified front desk that all tv channels were 'frozen'. System was rebooted but Mnet, Sky news and CNN not available on system. Notified them again. We're told that their supplier only operates until 17h00 so it will fixed 1st thing in the morning!!! Maintenance person then comes by to tell us the supplier is at another site and will attend to problem ASAP. Decided to have drink at Bar. BUT no Bar! Working on that too! At 20h00 still none of the tv channels as above and told will only be attended to in the morning! Really? At a 4 star hotel?

My wife and I are frequent visitors to Stellenbosch and recently stayed at the Protea Hotel Dorpshuis for the first time. Our overall experience was extremely favourable and, consequently, we hope to make many more return visits to this hotel. A summary of the key aspects of our stay is as follows:

The staff were pleasant and ever helpful
The duplex rooms were comfortable and afforded us plenty of space; the two flat screen TVs proved an added attraction
The outside areas were well maintained while the swimming pool and its surrounds provided the ideal place to relax
The hotel is perfectly situated for easy access to the historic, tree-lined Dorp Street

I had a very spacious room, very comfortable bed. Area outside my room very peaceful, lovely to just relax after a long day. It was a very pleasant stay and I will go back.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2012

The duplex rooms are very spacious. My room had a sitting area downstairs and a kitchenette. The downstairs bathroom has a shower and basin with plenty of toiletries.
The bedroom was located upstairs. The room has a flat screen TV, two chairs and a spacious bathroom. All the furniture in the room look a bit tired and the carpets do not seem perfectly clean. No effort has been made with regards to decor.

I ordered a greek salad and cheese platter. The salad was served with no salt or black pepper on the side. The cooldrink was served without a glass or ice. The cheese platter was very disappointing, both in presentation and taste. I expected so much more considering the beautiful cheeses being produced in the area.

The service during check out was good.

The bed was very comfortable but all things taken into consideration I would probably rate this as a 3 and a half star experience.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 27 which is one of the large duplex rooms.

The hotel is an historic building with the rooms grouped around a central courtyard that has shaded little nooks and a small pool. Our room, in the older section of the hotel, was 2 rooms, both small but very charming. The bedroom had old fashioned furniture and white lace while the living room had the TV and a door to the courtyard with a little cafe table just outside. There is a big public sitting room that just begs for you to cosy up with a book, and a restaurant, although we did not eat there.
The location is great; just 5 mintues walk to a shopping centre with grocery store and, across the main road, a very nice neighbourhood with lots of restaurants. This truly a place to take a day to put your feet up and not feel guilty about staying inside.
