“beautiful space, off the beaten path”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

I stayed at Bonne Esperance with a group of graduate students and other psychologists. We occupied four rooms for the course of a week, using it as our home base for day trips in the Western Cape. Everyone, from co-owners and desk staff to breakfast and housekeeping staff, where quite gracious and as helpful as could be. Breakfast included a large selection: yogurts, fruits and cereals, different breads each day, and a hot breakfast option each day. There was no reason to go hungry. Rooms were clean and comfortable, and the grounds appeared well kept. As these were cooler days in May, I never saw the pool in use, but it was a comfortable, private space if someone HAD wanted to use it.

I admit I was concerned about the apparent distance from shopping (I didn't like the idea of people walking in the dark for two blocks). However, I quickly learned that we were in a fairly safe area, and we could be nearly anywhere (from banks to restaurants to shops) in 10 or so minutes. Bonne Esperance s situated directly across from Stellenbosch University's spectacular botanical garden, which is a great visit on a warm day.

I agree it seems a bit expensive, but for the atmosphere, and the delicious breakfasts, I would definitely stay there again.

During a recent trip to South Africa, friends and I stayed at Bonne Esperance and used it as our base location for tours of the beautiful South African wine country. While not fancy or pretentious, which none of us wanted, we found Bonne Esperance to be a perfect and B&B: the staff was delightful, the rooms were cleam and comfortable,, the breakfast served was quite good, the location is absolutely perfect in all respects, and after facing the frustration of poor Internet connections at a number of very nice South African hotels, I was delighted to find that Bonne Esperance actually had the best connection I found in all of South Africa. Additionally, Annette, who is the mother of the owner of the Inn, is about a doubt the best tour guide for the wine country; her knowledge not only of the estates and vineyards, but of the history of the entire area, is second to none. I just wish I were there now!

Beautifull old house. Clean and bright rooms, basic 'hotel decoration'. Very good breakfast and very friendly hosts. Cosy living room and garden.
2 downsides: not enough parking space for all the rooms + our room was located on the street side, so we did had some street noise.

Room Tip: Do not take a room on the street side or behind the reception desk.

Great place to stay, walking distance to town and great restaurants. Rooms classic old but clean and welcoming. Breakfasts good basic food.
Tiny pool, ok if you need to cool down, not many sun loungers, considering how many people stay there.

Room Tip: All rooms individual so any would be fine .

Dear olive49

Thank you for you positive feedback, we always say Bonne Esperance is located on the best corner in Stellenbosch!

I am disappointed that you rated our service and value for money as three out of five because we believe that besides location those are our strongest points.

Our philosophy is: 3 star prices with 4 star ambiance and 5 star hospitality.

We hope you will return to experience it in the future again.

Kind regards
Annemien

We stayed here for two nights and were very pleasantly surprised with the size of our room and the huge bed! The rooms are beautifully decorated, clean and well-equipped. The staff are very nice and bent over backwards to help us.

I would highly recommend Bonne Esperance as a thoughtful, comfortable guest house. Thank you for having us!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 5

We have just spent 2 nights in the Bonne Esperance Guest House. We stayed in room 12 which was lovely and opened onto the courtyard garden. Very well appointed rooms with en-suite all very clean. Front desk staff were excellent and arranged our Vine Hopper Tour which collected us and returned us to our front door when we were very merry!
Great location and breakfast was very good indeed. Would stay here again and recommend to friends. A place full of character. Wonderful.

Room Tip: Room 12 is very nice!

The guest house is in a delightful old buiding near the centre of Stellenbosch. There is a new extension , which we were in but you cant tell the difference. The whole place is decorated and furnished in style with the age of the house, and it works. Our room was really nice, big beds, nice Juliet balcony overlooking cental pool and garden. Big bathrrom with bath. Air con and fan in room.
Breakfast excellent. So good we never got to the cooked bit. Cheese scones and fresh bread with cheese, nice coffee (always marks highly with me). Glass of wine on patio at very reasonable price.
Staff were charming and helpful. What more do you want?
