We go to South Africa once a year for Easter because my stepsons and my husband love the natural beautiful of the Cape Town area. We usually stay at Zandberg which unfortunately changed owners a couple of years ago and this year (2008) became a crashing disaster (literally! see review for Zandberg!). So we had to escape quickly.
We searched the area for something comparably to what Zandberg "used to be". Somewhere romantic and peaceful for the adults and yet a place where kids can frolic and play in nature and never get bored. We ran into Stellenbosch and it redeemed the holiday disaster caused by Zandberg.
We were lucky to have cottage 3 for a few days in spite of the last minute booking - I'm not sure I should continue with this review because we might not get "our" cottage anymore :) - but then had to switch to the main hotel part for the last 2 days. The hotel "suite" was wonderful too and does have a very "home-y" feeling. We had a big room downstairs with spiral stairs leading upstairs to another bedroom for the boys. It was almost like the cottage and we were not close to the roads or noise at all. We had a small terrace and a big shared enclosed garden with lots of grass, trees and small brushes. We hid Easter eggs and chocolates all over the grounds and the kids (and adults) had a ball finding the treasures. I could go on and on....but I have to move on to the cottage..
Cottage 3 (and I imagine all 3 are) is wonderful, isolated, beautiful and great for families. It's right on the lake - dreamy, romantic - and the kids love playing around in the old tank sitting on the lake. There's a big bedroom, a big living and kitchen area, a beautiful bathroom with a glass shower and an old romantic-style bathtub. There's a bbq grill on the big patio and we grilled outside quite a bit and cooked oten in the kitchen. Very clean and well taken care of...daily.
The staff: at the desk, housekeepers, cooks, waiters and witresses: all very helpful, very polite, very personal, very professional and very friendly. No complaints at all
Food: We only had breakfast there but I am still dreaming of the breakfasts a year later! Fresh fruits, yoghurts, eggs made to order, exotic juices, everything fresh...yum!
Price: unbeatable for the quality and service!
The kids asked us repeatedly if we can could return to Stellenbosch. Since we love it too so we've decided it would be our new "home" in Stellenbosch. We are traveling to SA for Easter again - this time with an addition of a 9-month old baby! - and have long booked our days of paradise at Soverby.
Oh, did I mention there are also a couple of very friendly dogs on the premises, on the side where the cottages are? You don't notice them if you're not looking for them but when you have kids, they tend to discover "everything!". The kids also played with the dogs everyday and even brought them into the cottage....sigh! Needless to say, they spent all their pocket money buying treats for the dogs.
The pictures on their website, unlike some others, have not been touched up or strategically taken. They are pretty accurate.
So, save yourself the hassle of looking around in Stellenbosch and go to Soverby. You won't be disappointed. But please do us a favor and never book Cottage 3 for Easter :-))
