“Best Decision We Made!”

We had four days at the end of a long Durban SA business meeting to enjoy the Cape Town wine country with another couple. We made a series of great decisions... first we contacted and hired Archie Stripp, an independent, licensed South African travel guide who greeted us at the airport and provided a two day-long culturally informative, scenic route into and out of the wine country. When we arrived at the Summerwood Guest House we were SO PLEASED! Beautiful home, a warm reception, outstanding rooms and so many lovely details! The four of us instantly felt at "home" and would inadvertently use that term "home" for the next several days whenever we were referring to the guesthouse! The fresh morning breakfast was beyond our expectations. We made the 15-20 minute walk into downtown Stellenbosch at least one each day. We were often passed by friendly locals and college coeds out jogging. It is a safe and beautiful walk even in the winter. Additionally, it was a welcomed relief to the hours on an airplane and even in the car as we made our way through all the fabulous wineries! If we ever travel to Cape Town in the future, we know exactly WHERE we are going to stay and WHO is going to show us all of the sights that we missed the first time around! We were so lucky to stay at Summerwood Guest House for two nights in February. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left we had superb service. The staff went out of their way, to make our stay as wonderful as possible. We were in Stellenbosch to celebrate a silver wedding anniversary, and the staff managed to make it into an experience we’ll never forget. They helped us arrange an unforgettable day on horseback with vine tasting and picnic in Franschhoek, and even made reservations for us, at the award-winning restaurant, Terroir. The bedrooms were so adorable and comfortable, and fully equipped with everything you’d except from a deluxe property. Almost felt like home. The breakfast was very tasteful and served overlooking the beautiful gardens and the pool. Nothing to complain about at all! Really enjoyed the lovely atmosphere of this private mansion and wish we had stayed longer. I can thoroughly recommend Summerwood and hope to be back again someday!

Some friends of ours had stayed here and just knew that we would love it. How right they were, it is so lovely. To breakfast in the garden in late November amongst the bouganvilia and beside the tranquil pool is amazing. The special of the day is on a chalk board and we chose it every day and were never disappointed. The staff remember names and advise on the best places to visit. We love to visit new places but this is such a wonderful place that we will definately return, for longer next time.

Stayed for 2 nights this month and we made to feel very welcome and at home. House and rooms were lovely as were all the staff. Ann was a lovely person and we could have chatted to her for hours. She booked us a wine tasting day with Annalees who was lovely and we had a fantastic day with her. Had a lovely meal in Umani.'s where we tried the Tasting Menu which included wine with every course. The food was very good. The only down side is that Ann and her staff continously asked us if we wanted any tea or coffee and as there are no facilites in the rooms we had assumed they were complementary but we were charged when we got our bill. I think they should make it clear they are not Complementary. All in all we had a lovely stay.

“This is not just a "Guest House"!”

This is no Guest House! I have stayed in hotels claiming to be 4* in the UK and they do not even come close to this beautiful house. The attention to detail was wonderful. We were welcomed personally, provided with a refreshing drink in the lounge and pampered us for the rest of our stay.

The room was large, very flowery with an en-suit bathroom to dream of! We had views on 3 sides of the room with large windows overlooking the mountains in the distance – truly beautiful. There are no tea and coffee facilities in the room because they say that they are there “to spoil you” and if you want anything at any time just ask and they will look after you –when my husband asked for an iron, they arrived at the door took away his shirts and returned them 15 minutes later beautiful pressed!

The staff were very friendly and very helpful. Being a guesthouse there is no restaurant for dinner, but they have a detailed menu list of the restaurants in the town for you to read at your leisure. Once you have selected where you want to eat they will even make the reservation for you. Its safe and easy to walk into town, but it will take you about 30 minutes. Whilst we were heading off along the Garden Route they even made some recommendations for stops on the way, including a café style restaurant called the Whale-Station in Betty’s Bay which I would highly recommend – especially if you like huge steaming pots of delicious mussels. Does not look much from the front by def worth heading inside! (By the way Betty’s Bay is the better than place to see the Penguins!).

They had a beautiful pool area at the front of the house – just a shame that it was not quite warm enough during our stay to enjoy it!

Stellenbosch was a wonderful place to visit, we only wish we had more time to stay there and explore all the vineyards in the surrounding area – especially the tasting bit!
