“Truly a guest house!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2012

I spent 10 days at Summerwood in July, 2012 during the time I visited the nearby University. The guest house had just been purchased by new owners who are really emphasizing the guesthouse experience. The room was very comfortable - spacious and spotless. The staff - from managers-on-duty to kitchen help - was extremely friendly and anxious to help. I got to interact with the owner and some of his family, and several of the managers, and their suggestions and guidance on restaurants and gifts for family were spot on. A very large variety of choices for breakfast - hot and made to order, a number of fruits and juices, a selection of pastries or cereals - and a very personalized service. I had beautiful, fall-like weather for most of my visit, but on one day when it was rainy and my fatigue on return to Summerwood obvious to the manager, she brought some tea to me in my room - very kind and thoughtful. As others mentioned, the location to the downtown area and the University is very convenient - close enough to walk if you want to get some exercise -but Summerwood itself is very quiet, away from their noise and bustle. I would highly recommend Summerwood because I did feel like I was treated like I was a guest of a family friend.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Summerwood in early May. It is a lovely property just on the outskirts of the town of Stellenbosch. Although it is possible to walk into the town, which we did during the day, it is much easier, and probably safer, to drive in the evening. We were warmly received and offered a warm drink as it had turned cool and rainy on the day that we arrived. We had booked a room which turned out to be at the top of the building with windows in every direction. We appreciated the view once the clouds cleared on the following morning. The room was beautifully appointed but two caveats on this particular accommodation. First of all, it required climbing two sets of stairs, the second of which was steep and rather narrow. Not a problem for us physically but a consideration for many folks. If you had heavy bags, Summerwood had an employee to carry them upstairs, but he was not a young man and it made us uncomfortable to ask for his help. The other issue is that it took several minutes for hot water to reach the bathroom. On our first morning, we never did get water that was more than lukewarm. We were told that this was due to our being at the top of the house, understandable in an older home but still frustrating. The bed was comfortable, the room spacious and full of light. There was little traffic noise but one of the neighbors does have a dog that likes to bark. Do not plan on watching TV as there are only about 6 or 7 channels, but there was free wifi. All of our hosts (they differed each day) were friendly and helpful. They happily recommended vineyards, sights to see, scenic roads and restaurants. We particulary enjoyed our visit to Rustenburg Vineyard. Our Summerwood hosts provided us with safety tips, explained about the parking attendants in the downtown, lent us maps. The breakfast was very nice and the public rooms were warm and welcoming. On arrival we were given a key to our room and a remote for the security gate. At breakfast, whoever was there came by our table to chat and answer questions. Stellenbosch itself is a lovely little university town with good restaurants, interesting historic sites, lovely gardens. We would definitely recommend this boutique hotel provided you have a vehicle.

My partner and I spent 17 nights at Summerwood arriving mid-January 2012. We were slightly concerned that we were being a bit unadventurous by staying in the one place for the whole of our holiday in the Cape Winelands - but I am so glad we did.
Ann and her team made our stay a wonderful experience and I can't thank them enough for everything they did for us. Their friendly, informal and helpful manner and excellent standard of service made us feel very much at home.
Our room was not especially luxurious but very clean and comfortable. The gardens and large pool are very pleasant and we enjoyed a lovely breakfast each morning on the patio.
Summerwood is a good 15 minute walk into the centre of Stellenbosch where there are an abundance of bars and restaurants. There is a Spar close to the hotel which sells all the essentials and excellent ice cream! We hired bikes from the Adventure Centre for the first 8 days and explored the area including some of the wineries recommended by our hosts. There are excellent biking routes in the local area including various 'challenging' mountain biking trails at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.
Stellenbosch is situated at the heart of the Cape Winelands and is an excellent base from which to visit the wineries - many of which have excellent restaurants. A taxi ride from the airport takes around 30 minutes and the car journey into Cape Town is around 45 minutes.
We know through speaking to the other guests that the level of repeat business which Summerwood enjoys is very high and we can't recommend it highly enough.
We're hoping to head for the winter sunshine at the same time again next year and already we know where we will be staying.
