“Very enjoyable visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

An informative and interesting visit to the four houses which make up this museum. The staff were knowledgable and happy to answer questions. It was a good insight into the life of the priviledged white population of SA.

“A museum that feels 'lived in'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

A small section of glass cased exhibits - mostly toys and dolls of yesteryear - by the entrance then four separate houses portraying Stellenbosch life at different periods in the last 350 years. The Schreuderhuis dating from around 1700 had very simple furniture, a herb garden and a most informative guide. Adjacent was the Blettermanhuis - dating from 1789 - showed a good selection of contemporary furnishings in an 'H' plan house, again with gardens, chickens and another good guide. Out of the gate and across the street was the Grosvenor House, dating from the early 1800s. This has a good selection of fine furniture, clocks and paintings - all explained, when necessary, by the guide. Outside, at the rear of the house, was a large garden with typical plantings from that era. Across the street and along the block to the corner of Church Street was the O.M.Bergh home, dating from about 1850 and housing typical Victorian furnishings. Most interesting were the bathroom - with a primitive shower - and the nursery - with a selection of toys and books from that era. As noted above, each house had its own costumed guide who was able to answer questions and give explanations.
This was our second visit as we were in the area last year and it was certainly worth repeating.

“A living museum.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

A very enjoyable half hour or so visiting four living museum period houses. At each house you are met by a lady in period costume who tells you about the house and who lived there. Very interesting.

“Beautifully presented old houses”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Although we had been to Stellenbosch many times, we visited this museum for the first time after seeing it recommended in a guide book. The houses are beautifully presented and show various periods from 1709 to 1850 and different degrees of grandeur. Inside each house museum staff in period costume will give a brief, if somewhat monotonous, introduction and then leave you to wander. Really worth seeing and well done.

“Colonial history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

You visit 4 colonial houses in original state! The museum looks small but extends across the street.
