“UNDERATED”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

A very busy family restaurant on weekends and not on everyones dining list for some reason. Easy to find some good dishes and they have a good selection of beers and wines. Pricing ok.

“The Restaurant at Eikendal is not to be missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

Nestling beneath the Helderberg mountains between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, the Restaurant at Eikendal offers superb lunches either outside on the lawns under the trees overlooking a pristine lake or inside in the warm and welcoming restaurant. Offering a blend of fusion cooking and unexpected twists on favourite South African dishes, chef Mark Radnay showcases the best of locally sourced, seasonal ingredients in a menu that changes regularly.

During a recent visit to Cape Town we dined there twice. The first lunch was a group of 12 people. We sat outside because the weather was gorgeous – and the food was simply outstanding.

Among the starters we sampled were tiger prawn raviolis with a tomato basil vinaigrette; an African-styled Caesar salad with smoked snoek instead of anchovies, biltong instead of bacon, avocado and parmesan crisps; and a sweet potato gnocchi with a wild mushroom sauté, truffle oil and parmesan. All the starters were superb.

Some of our main courses included venison stroganoff (we had ostrich) with brandied mushrooms, courgette ribbons, spatzle and sour cream; oven baked line fish with garden pea and mint risotto, blush tomatoes and greens; and a matured Karan beef fillet on rosti with glazed root vegetables and a giant roasted mushroom.

The stand-out desert on the day was a divine lemon tart (not too sweet, not too tart) with mandarin segments and a delicious homemade orange-honey ice-cream.

Our second lunch consisted of just three of us. Our starters included a special salad of fresh figs, the chef’s homemade Chevon cheese, micro greens and a balsamic reduction and a spiced kudu Carpaccio with a rosemary-honey vinaigrette and jewel-potato crisps. Our mains included a special of the day which was a melt-in-the-mouth fillet with a creamy peppercorn sauce and an Ethiopian chicken curry flavoured with 15 spices and served with couscous and preserved lemon salad. We didn’t have time for desert because we had to get to the airport, but next time…

The service was excellent on both occasions, and you can follow up your meal with a wine tasting where you can experience some of Eikendal’s exceptional award-winning wines.

Eikendal Restaurant is at the Eikendal Wine Estate on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. Reserve your table by calling 021 855 5033.

“Snack on sunset”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

Location is so important for a venue. You want to be visible from a main road but not too close, to prevent traffic noise. Eikendal got this 100% right. Right on the busy R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West but with all the plants, trees and beautiful lake breaking the traffic noise, it does seem quite peaceful.

The restaurant only offers the snack menu on Friday evenings, during the summer period. They also entertain guests with live music, from a variety of talented musicians. They started asking cover charge of R30 somewhere during the season, which added to the total cost, what doesn't make it as affordable as some of the surrounding venues.

I had the most delicious pizza with blush tomato, boccancini cheese, spring onion, red pepper sun dried tomato pesto and wild rocket. It was divine and if they offered pizzas on a regular basis, people would go there more often, as it was irresistible. I had a bite of the wild mushroom pizza with bacon, onion marmalade and French white truffle oil as well, that was just as enjoyable.

As with many venues in the Stellenbosch area, there is also a tasting room, so you can try out a variety of wines while you are there.

We sat outside on a large lawn with a play area for kids. This is a great venue for families, just watch out as the lake is not surrounded by a fence.

The restaurant is normally just open for lunch.

“The customer feels not like king, but as petitioners”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

On last Sunday we arrived at Eikendal Restaurant in Stellenbosch at 2:50 pm. We were very astonished that the staff told us, that lunch time had been finished, because the opening time is normally until 4:00 pm on Sundays. Maybe it is arrogance or just plain unknowledge of the management about what the staff makes, but sustained Eikendal Restaurant lost 4 guests.

Superb quisine that complements perfect wines. Excellent environment, well worth the trip. On a sunny day it is perfection personified with the gentle dam bubbling away.
