“Wedding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2006

Its easy to sum up this place in one word - Beautiful.

We held our wedding here. We stayed in the presidential suite and used the private garden for the ceremony.

The Mountain views were a spectacular backdrop and the estates gardens were beautifully maintained.

What made the day even more special were the staff who were polite and attentive without being intrusive. The wedding co-ordinator was particularly helpful - nothing was too much trouble.

The food was of high standard - we ate in the main restaurant (out on the terrace) on several occasions prior to the actual day.

The suite was luxurious and included a wonderful old style library, the private garden attached to the suite was a real bonus.

We fell in love with Lanzerac as soon as we drove through the gate - it really is the most perfect place to exchange vows!

As you drive in to Lanzerac, you can see what is in store. Beautiful sweeping drive, beautiful dutch cape buildings.
Service was excellent, and the food in the governor's restaurant was to die for.
Great spa too, and to cap it all, fabulous wine.
Highly recommended

This hotel is a gem. Quiet, refined and seeped in history. Our room was large and beautifully furnished with a private courtyard garden and terrace. There was fresh orange juice and chilled sparkling wine waiting for us too. Our luggage was discreetly delivered to the room, our car valet parked and we had a charming member of staff (Shadrak) take us to the room and show us around. There was a huge bathroom too with shower stall, bath and double vanity.

The grounds are picturesque with terrific views, the pool is small but nicely maintained.

The public areas are exquite too, it feels like a private stately home. Breakfast was good taken on a multi levelled out door terrace. We ate one evening in the Govenor's Room retaurant. It was good although my partners ostrich steak was a little disappointing. However, their cheesecake is something else!

The Manor is out of town which did not bother us but if you are after nightlife and bars its not for you. Oh, and the wine they make is excellent too.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights over Valentines day weekend. The hotel is indeed beautiful and the rooms are OK, although well short of 5 star quality.
However we had a littany of problems
The first evening we ate in on the terrace (rather oddly all three restauarants serve the same menu) the service was slow and there was a marked absence of management, with no explanation of the problem. The food when it finally arrived was luke warm and disappointing.
The second night, Valentines, again booked on the terrace, thinking it had been a one night aberration. It soon became clear it was not. After three hours by which time we had been served a starter, i asked to see the Manager, The Food and Beverage Manager duly appeared and when asked where the problem lay said the problem was the 'the guests'.
I then asked to see the General manager the following morning who at the last moment was called away to an urgent meeting with the owner. It is too much to hope he was going to lose his job!
To finally put the icing on the cake as we checked out at 11 we found that the sprinklers were programmed to come on at that time, which made it impossible to leave the room without waterproofs. The path that leads to the car park was similarly cut off by sprinklers in action
Overall my impression is that the staff try quite hard but that the management lack competence and clearly could not care less

I wrote trip reviews after our S Africa stay last summer, but I failed to post any info on this site, so I'm doing so 18 months later! Seeing that no one has reviewed this property, I felt compelled to share our experience. When we walked into the lobby, my husband's jaw dropped, and he could only say "WOW!" This is one of the most beautiful places I've seen in my travels. It sits off the main roads in a suburban setting, so it is quiet and secluded. We stayed in June, which is off season, but was gorgeous with brilliant blue skies and temperatures around 70 deg. F daily. We requested a room just above the standard (luxury), but I believe we were upgraded. I really can't say! We stayed on the second level above the Presidential suite in a vaulted room which overlooks the huge lawn, pool, vineyards and mountains. Our terrace was huge. We could have hosted a party of 40 easily. The bed had luxury sheets and a custom mattress. There was a heated floor pad on each side of the bed, as well as a heated towel rack and robes in the bathroom. The service was warm and polite, not at all stuffy. Breakfasts were included in a sunny, gorgeous dining area. We also enjoyed a delicious dinner here as well. Fresh fruits, juices and cheeses plus specialty hot dishes were available daily. We loved wandering the grounds, tasting their wines and playing with the kitties. I almost cried when we left, wishing we had stayed here at least another few days. This was our first visit to the wine region and we selected 3 properties. They were all wonderful for different reasons, but this place was the most charming and romantic. We still talk about it! I thought it was very reasonable and worth every penny.
I'm trying to be balanced and say something that wasn't to our liking. All I can say is that in the town of Stellenbosch, all the street names are painted on the curbs, and then some are not visible. We got lost a lot, and drove in circles, but everyone was nice and tried to help us! We actually had a lot of laughs about this. There were fabulous restaurants in town as well- Lanzerac personnel helped us choose places to try and gave us assistance in our travels. This is one place everyone should experience! As Americans visiting Africa for the first time, we were a bit worried about how we would be treated and how safe we would be. This area was beyond our best expectations. We were treated so well- actually better than we have ever been. We will return to beautiful S Africa some day. It's a long flight, but well worth it!
