“Definitely 5*”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2009

My wife and I (mid 50s) and our son (13) had 2 stays in the Lanzerac one for 4 days and the other 1 day. The first stay we were in rooms 225/227 which were both double rooms in an annexe about 20yds from the main building. Each room was well equipped and spacious but not quite big enough to have a third bed. Both rooms had a patio which opened out into the vinyard about 20yds away (the hotel is part of a vinyard complex and complimentary wine tasting is offered - it is a bit mean to only offer 3 glasses each (tasted 6 when we shared glasses) when there are only about 10 wines available. They do a classy kitchen/BBQ apron for R100 which is a good souvenir/present. The bathrooms were of a generous size with a standalone iron bath and there were 2 wash-hand basins. Bath robes supplied. There were 2 pools convenient to our rooms but being outdoor and winter we were not brave enough to try them.
The other rooms we used were 001 and 003 which felt slightly smaller and overlooked a pool with about 20 other rooms. The bath was built in.
Accommodation was of a very high standard, the rooms clean and well maintained - only criticism is that the windows tend to be small and the lighting is not the strongest so the rooms can feel a bit dark - maybe winter and a bit over critical.
We had the use of the swimming pool in the spa complex - the pool is warm and the jacuzzi is if anything too hot 40c. My wife had a spa treatment R490 which she really enjoyed and considered really excellent value
The restaurant is in the main building and is what you would expect in an old Dutch cape manor house - oil portraits, wooden panelling and comfortable chairs to have your coffee after the meal.
The breakfasts are not wanting in any way and are the best I have ever had. Choice of juices, fruits, nuts etc, cereal, cold meats/cheese, breads/croissants - the fry was freshly cooked most days but on the other day it was self service (you could have your eggs freshly cooked) - all was of the highest standard
We dined Table d'Hote all evenings R160 pp - the food tended towards nouvelle cuisine which is not my style but of a very high standard. Meal consisted of an appetiser, starter, sorbet, main course and sweet. One left the table leaving a clean plate, full but not gorged. As we found generally in SA steaks were really excellent and generous. The wine list was mainly local SA and extensive except for a page of very expensive imported mainly French wines. Wines which we found very drinkable started about R100 - soft drinks were about R10.
There is free internet access available in the landing above the reception
Reception was excellent and efficient and being a relatively small hotel our name and room nos were known by all the reception staff - impressive
The hotel was extremely well staffed and were pleasant and helpful at all times. Despite being winter the hotel was quite busy - the restaurant was nearly full most nights.
A very well run hotel and I find it difficult to comprehend how anyone could be critical of a stay. We found our stay at the hotel most relaxing and there is a reasonable amount for tourists to do in the vicinity. The hotel is located on the edge of Stellenbosch (centre 5 mins by car) in the countryside.
Definitely one of the best hotels we have stayed in, if not the best - definitely 5* - our visit lived up to the expectation we had from their website if not exceeded it

Stayed here for 5 nights. The rooms are very well equipped, super bathroom with bath and shower plus 2 sinks and all the usual toiletries you expect in a 5 star hotel. Excellent air conditioning, really comfortable beds with choice of pillows. Satellite TV, parking close to the room. Security excellent. There are 3 pools plus an indoor at the Spa. The grounds are lovely and the weather was great. The only disappointment was the restaurant at dinner. Breakfast was good but in the evening the service was not up to the standard of the rest of the hotel and we only eat there twice out of the 5 nights.

We were very impressed with the room which was large and comfortable - more of a "cottage" arranged around one of four small swimming pools. The bathroom was equally spacious.

The staff were friendly and attentive and the food (while not "fine dining" in the main restaurant) was consistently good - one of the best steaks I have ever had. The outside terrace for breakfast was delightful. The cigar lounge was a lovely place for a late night drink.

I used the spa on one occasion for a massage and being a beauty therapist myself it was one of the best massages I have ever had.

The hotel is a 10 min drive from the centre of Stellenbosch where there are several good restaurants but Franschoek we found to be more upmarket for eating out.

The location, in a working vineyard, is wonderfully quiet and restful, we would visit again.

Historic Lanzerac is in a stunning setting in Stellenbosch, and the Cape Malay architecture is lovely. The wine isn't bad either. But that's about all I can say good about Lanzerac. The food was average, hardly better than pub food. The service was indifferent and lazy. The staff clearly have no interest in the hotel or its guests, and seem to lack training and leadership. Even a simple request for an umbrella was met with a straight "no". I had the cheapest room type of room available, and it was very tired with little character - mould in the shower, leaky drain under the sink, cracked glass in the window. A real shame that this gem is so badly tarnished. I wouldn't stay again. See my review of Asara is you're looking for a really polished diamond!

I stayed at Lanzerac in October and was very very disapointed with the hotel. Rooms were just ok, bath was leaking all over the bathroom, no internet connection, frosty service... Very bad food and poor room service.

It's a pity because it's a beautiful area, just bad management if you ask me.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2008

We planned a wine weekend and needed overnight accommodation in the wine lands somewhere. We were apprehensive of staying at Lanzerac, as we have stayed there before and had an absolutely horrendous experience. The new reviews on Tripadvisor weren’t all good either. But in the end, price won. The price we paid for the accommodation including breakfast & dinner was very cheap for a 5 star hotel. And we couldn’t get the same standard of accommodation for the same price anywhere else in the wine lands. As we were apprehensive of what might go wrong, we expected nothing from the hotel. We conditioned our minds to actually expect the worst. How wrong we were.

Upon arrival at Lanzerac, the porter collected all our bags and we were shown to reception to check in. We were offered our welcoming drink – anything from port, juice, wine etc – and checked in. Service was impeccable. Our porter showed us to our room, which was located around one of the swimming pools in the estate. Our room was massive with a massive bathroom, and as the whole estate has been through an interior revamp since our last stay, it was nice to see that furnishings were a bit more modern. Everything was catered for in the rooms. Wonderful Mohini soaps, gels etc in the bathroom which boasted a big shower, bath, double vanity and this all for a classical room. We went to the terrace for a bottle of bubbly, and were given snacks as wellm, while sitting and looking at the wonderful manor house. Lanzerac Estate truly is one of the most beautiful wine estates in the whole of the Cape Peninsula. Our waiter replenished all snacks while sitting. Service again impeccable and with a smile. We spent the rest of the day relaxing on the estate.

We booked for the first sitting of dinner. Dinner itself exceeded our expectations. Sitting in the gorgeous Governor’s Hall while a musician with a harp provides the background music. The service was excellent and the food was also very good. Every time you would stand up or move around, the napkins were folded up and placed neatly again. Small things like this that made the evening very special. A turn-down was done in the room while having dinner, as expected. Breakfast the following morning was up to standard with the 5 star rated hotel.

Lanzerac surprised us this time, as there was nothing that we could fault. Everything was as expected of a 5 star hotel. And because it is such a beautiful estate and perfect location, I think we’ll return again and again. And hopefully all of them will be like this time.

  • Liked — the location and beauty of the estate
  • Disliked — the loud music in the cigar bar in the evening

Having read the rather mixed reviews,, I was a little apprehensive about our stay at Lanzerac, at the beginning of our holiday to SA.

I needn't have worried!

We were greeted by delightful staff in a beautiful reception, offered drinks, and given a wonderful welcome.

We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel on two occasions, and both were very good. Our rooms were beautiful, and although in part the grounds looked as if they needed a little attention, we were thrilled with the accommodation.

A driver had been arranged to take us into Capetown, and he really acted as a tour guide, told us his personal history - which was fascinating - and took us to the various parts of Capetown, which was not part of his brief.

As usual, the Spa was trying to sell as much product as possible, but the actual treatments were very good.

Whilst Lanzerac is not a flash 5 star hotel, it is a delightful place, and was a wonderful start to our holiday.

  • Liked — The friendly staff and newly refurbished accommodation
  • Disliked — The odd bug - but no-one can help that!
