My recent 3-night stay at Spier proved a huge disappointment. Having paid R1700 per room per night, including breakfast, I really did not expect to have to "beg" for coffee from a waiter, who ignored me, and continued to serve a group of German visitors. When my colleague who was dining with me enquired about his tardiness, the waiter's response was: " I asked someone else to serve you". I'd like to suggest that management set up a beverage station, and I'm sure guests will be more than happy to serve themselves, than to be subjected to such insult!
While the cereals, fruit, breads and cheeses served at breakfast were fresh and in abundance the same cannot be said of the hot buffet. I saw guests squinting at limp eggs that were fried well ahead of them being eaten, and potatoe slices that literally looked "tired". I overheard foreign guests commenting that the potatoes " must have been good two days ago". I refused to eat the eggs that were prepared ahead of time, and requested the chef to prepare an omelette for me, which I got, but not before being told that "there were eggs in the bain marie!!"
The standard of housekeeping was plain shocking, and left little to be desired. All four of us colleagues commented on used glasses not being replaced in our rooms, of ashtrays not being emptied and replaced. One colleague found a pile of used towels in her bathroom. She also spoke of dropping a bit of make up in the sink, only to find that the spillage had not been cleaned up when she returned from her conference 10 hours later. Another colleague found coffee mugs that were too tall for the coffee machine, which proved an inconvenience as he was not able to make himself a cup of coffee in the morings before breakfast. Also, his shower did not work properly as the water collected at his ankles. This was reported but never repaired!
Be warned that the rooms, while big, are not comfortable. My bathroom was overrun by ants, my shower by spiders; and there's just too much outside light that enters the room from panels and shutters that cannot be blacked out. The bar fridge also gives off light as it has a glass door. All of this serve only to compromise the quality of one's sleep.
For me Spier resembles sloppliness, with a workforce that is inattentive and who appeared annoyed and irritable throughout our stay. I will certainly not encourage other colleagues to book a stay there, which is really sad as it has the most stunning location.

Dear Deon T,

Please accept my sincerest apologies for the service related issues experienced during your recent stay. I was very disappointed to read your comments on your experiences and rest assured I will be taking action to rectify all the issues raised with the departments mentioned. This is not the standard of service delivery that we as a hotel aspire too or that we are proud of.
The comment that concerns me the most is your reference to the foreign travellers, as a business we do not favor foreigners over locals. All of our guests are treated equally, as all guests are equally important to us. You obviously were given the impression that we treat people differently, and I will be working closely with the restaurant manager to address this with the service staff to ensure that this perception is changed. There is also no excuse for rude staff, I will be using your comments during our next training sessions on customer service.
I would really like to discuss all of your comments with you in person, please could you email me your contact details at your earliest convenience. My address is email@example.com.
Once again please accept my apologies, I do however hope that you will afford Spier another opportunity to show you what we are capable of.
