“OK restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

We had a party of 11 people for a birthday celebration at this restaurant. The booking was made months in advance and we were impressed with the attention given to it up until the time of arrival. Some of our party stayed in The Country Guesthouse and so we started with pre-dinner drinks in the manor house which went without a hitch. Once seated in the restaurant around 7.15pm, service fell apart. The same waiter was allocated to us but the time taken to get wine and water flowing was unacceptable and quite trying to the host. We explained that we would pour the wine ourselves and his only job was to ensure that wine and water was available. This seemed to be a difficult concept to deal with. At no stage during the evening were we approached by the manager to see if everything was in order. No acknowledgement of a birthday celebration was made either. Only 3 starters were ordered and then we waited 1 1/2 hours for the mains. A full restaurant is not an excuse. Generally our party was happy with the steaks. The signature dish - duck and cherry pie was disappointing; it was on special at half price and perhaps that would explain the miserly amount of duck. Overall it was an OK experience but we prefer out of the ordinary. Won't be back.

“A proper meal guaranteed !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

We travel between the UK and SA throughout the year and our new routine is to eat at 96 the night before we leave for London and repeat the exercise the night after we return! This is a restaurant of note, best steaks and accompaniments, best atmosphere winter or summer and certainly the best service on offer. They cook the steak as you like it, choose your size and your cut and if you ask for medium its comes just like that! Two people, 3 courses and superb 2008 Webersburg Cab, liquors and coffee total bill R845 including tip......where else in the world for £55 would you get that??
my favourite, no wonder the waitress remembers my name!!!

“Always welcoming and always good.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

The treatment we get in this restaurant is excellent, they are always willing to help even at very short notice.

The best for red meat and some of the "very special" dishes.

“Wonderful lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

It is always great to go back to an old-time favourite and on a cold winter's day the log fire creates the ambience that will have us keep coming back, in addition to the wonderful Norwegian salmon.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

Very cosy restaurant during winter time with couple of fireplaces. Starters were tasty, but overpriced for the amount of food on the plate. Main however made up for this. In my opinion one of the top 3 restaurants in Stellenbosch to have steak. Also very generous portion of french fries and vegetables to accompany the meal. Wine list is diverse, however wines are pretty expensive if compared to retail and wine farm value. The bar is also well stocked and could prepare a number of drinks requested. Overall very nice evening, would have given 5 for better value on starters and maybe some cheaper wine options.
