My wife and I had the pleasure of dining at this extraordinary restaurant during our stay in Stellenbosch in October, 2012. Simply put, it was one of the top overall dining experiences we have ever had. The restaurant is a gem. It is nestled quietly among the scenic, rolling vineyards of Stellenbosch. To enter, you must take a deadend, country road, then go through a guarded gate where your reservation is confirmed before you are permitted entrance. We are from the USA and not totally comfortable driving on the left side of the road and we also knew that we would be having wine at dinner, so we were glad that our hotel in downtown Stellenbosch could arrange for a car to take us and pick us up. The fare was about $25.00 US (R425) each way but well worth it. Without getting into a long descriptive review, suffice it to say that the food at Rust en Vrede was exceptional (I particularly enjoyed the Loin of Lamb for my third course, and the Peanut Tuile for dessert), the service was impeccible and the ambience was charming. We also were delighted with the value of our meal as our bill was most reasonable and far below what we are used to paying in the US at comparable establishments. If you go, try the Rust en Vrede Estate 2007 red blend which was so good we ordered an extra bottle to take home with us. As someone who has enjoyed some of the world's finest restaurants, I have to put Rust en Vrede up there with the best.
