“Good choice for business”

I stayed there 3 times over a period of 18 months. I can recommend this hotel for business in Cape Town. Located a few minutes’ drive away from the Waterfront (nightlife, major shopping & sights), the CICC and city centre – too far to walk though! The hotel will arrange transfers/shuttles (not complimentary!). Despite the proximity to the sea, no view at all from any of the rooms. Efficient service, good breakfast. The hotel is clean and modern. The "corporate rooms", all on the left side of the hotel corridors, are small but beautifully designed and fitted. The larger sized rooms (all on the right hand side of the hotel corridor) were due for renovation when I last visited. These rooms were very "tired", but comfortable and clean. There is a chain-brand steakhouse directly below the hotel so you don’t have to walk or drive around after hours. This is fortunate, as you don’t really want to be out and about in the area alone at night. As everywhere in the world, exercise common sense and caution when you do leave the hotel after dark.

Map to hotel as provided by hotel website is not very clear. I know Cape Town, and still got lost!

I was given my room key, and went upstairs to find I had been assigned a room someone was already staying in - not good. They then put me into another room, which was a smoking room, which I had specifically requested not to get.

Other than that, location is good, service is good, breakfast is excellent. Stayed in a room on the top floor which was tiny (by SA standards, but avergae for European standards) but adequate.

I liked this hotel, and it was good value for money, but what I must warn you is that in this case, what you see is not what you get. The web page pictures show you a hotel that seems to overlook the ocean, and a pool that looks normal, when it is actually tiny (does not deserve to be called a swimming pool). The hotel is on a street that is perpendicular to the ocean, and does only have "a view" from the side, a block away. The room was ok, although there is no free access to internet, and no in-room safe (had to go to a general safe room in the ground floor to get money every day). I would definitely look for another hotel in my next trip to Cape Town, which by the way is A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT. I COULD LIVE THERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — The hotel was ok, nothing out of the ordinary. Modern and clean, but the location was not so great
    • Disliked — That the pool was tiny and with almost no space to sunbathe.
    • Tips/Secrets: — Try to get a hotel closer to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. It is worth it. Specially if you don't have a car.

“Good Hotel”

Protea Hotel Sea Point

We stayed here for the first week of our honeymoon and it met all our expectations. It is your basic city hotel - our room was not particulary large but modern, clean and comfortable. It was the perfect base for getting out and exploring - the promenade is lovely and it is possible to walk to the V&A Waterfront but it takes about an hour. Altenativly, a sight seeing open top bus tour leaves from the promenade (just along from the open air pool) and stops at the Waterfront and table mountain amongst other places. It's not expensive and you can get on and off as many times as you like.
We found the area quite safe but did feel a litlle uncomfortable walking on Main Rd at night whilst looking for restaurants - try Buzby's bar and grill on Maid Road (recommend taxi ride at night) or La Perla italian on Beech Road (a couple of blocks away)

“New Year in Cape Town”

Protea Hotel Sea Point

Booked two roms in the Protea at Sea Point over Christmas and the New Year period. On arrival I found that our rooms were on the first floor and the balcony was directly next to the smelly air conditioning unit.Beneath our balcony slept several homeless people. The hotel did move us quickly to the fourth floor and further along. The rooms were clean and bright.Breakfast was lovely and the steak bar at night was good for our two older teenagers. Staff at reception were very helpful and pleasent. The bar is small with limited stocks. The hotel was in an ideal spot in peak season. Out of the busy Waterfront area in Cape Town and close enough to get there when we wanted.Rooftop pool area is small but we always got a sunbed or a chair. The hotel will serve snacks up there if you ring room service.Excellent laundary service ( same day , no extra charge).Beach is 2 minutes walk away and a lovely traditional prom to walk along.
