“Leave the chaos of life behind”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2010

The purpose of this holiday was to get away from the stresses and headaches of working life. I can't think of a more perfect place to do that than Rolbaken. The location is amazing. Talk about peaceful! The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful that you end up just staring at it for hours!

Mary and Dick are wonderful hosts who immediately make you feel welcome. You must try Mary's cooking! She is a genius in the kitchen! It was lovely to have breakfast provided and because of the glorious weather, we were able to sit on the veranda taking in the views and enjoying fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal and a delicious twist on the cooked breakfast!

The Guest House itself is delightful. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. It was great to have a massive bed to myself! Everything that you could possibly need has been provided. I just wish I could have stayed there longer.

Thank you so much, Dick and Mary. You really have worked hard to create a superb Guest House. You both should feel very proud. I look forward to staying again very soon.

An excellent discovery. Rolbaken is situated well off the beaten track, and you have to travel about 12 miles (19km) on a dirt road to get to it but bare with it because it is well worth it. We were met by by Dick and Mary Carr who own the property and they immediately made us feel very welcome. The guest house is situated away from Dick and Marys house and has its own veranda and garage, there is also a small pool and BBQ facilities. The views are lovely in all directions and there is a distinct feeling of being away from it all.

There is a large lounge area with comfortable chairs, a table and an extensive selection of books. There is a large kitchen and dining room and the bedroom is comfortable with a king size bed and en suite bathroom.

The hosts also provide dinner if you require it and may I suggest that you do take advantage of it. Mary cooks everything from scratch and whenever possible uses the organic ingredients from the farm. We were treated to an Ostrich salad starter followed by their own organic lamb chops with potatoes and veg and finally a fig desert using hand picked figs from their own trees. It was delicious. Breakfast was equally tasty with a full compliment of cereals, juices, toast, and yoghurts to start and then on to a full cooked breakfast. You will definitely not start the day hungry! Dick and Mary ask if they could join you for dinner and breakfast as they like to get to know their guests. Of course we were delighted to have them join us but for those who would prefer to eat on their own then that is okay too. Meals are eaten on the veranda if the weather permits and is a lovely setting.

I really wish I could have spent a few more nights there to really take advantage of the lovely countryside and the walks which you can go on. Dick is a conservationist by trade and is very knowledgable about local flora and fauna. I certainly hope to go back again on our next visit to South Africa.

I and some close friends stayed at Rolbaken guest house this February for two weeks, and it was the best holiday I have ever had. It is a little out of town but if you follow Dick's directions it’s easy to find. I have stayed in some of the world’s best hotels-this guest house leaves them for dead, it has 3 bed rooms all with ensuite, a large kitchen that has everything you would ever want, and a large lounge. If ever a place was a home from home, this is it. Mary and Dick were our wonderful hosts, they couldn’t do enough for us. Mary's food is to die for. Their business is running a Dorper sheep stud and it was wonderful to be able to help. We were soon treated like family and Dick and Mary took us to see some local bush paintings Dick’s background is in conservation, and it was like having our personal bush expert. We could have stayed at a hotel in Oudtshoorn, many do. Trust me that would be a massive mistake. Take the drive out to Rolbaken, you will have the highlight of your trip to South Africa. My friends and I did. We'll be back!

We spent nearly 3 weeks in Rolbaken but never felt bored. Although it is a bit off the beaten track there is still so much to see and do within an hour's drive. We loved the absolute peace and quiet, the stars at night and the beautiful birds. In Switzerland we always perceive South Africa as being dangerous but we experienced a very safe and friendly environment whereever we travelled in the area. Oudtshorn is a lovely town with all sorts of places to explore and we brought back some interesting African treasures.
The food at Mary's kitchen was excellent and we both put on some weight...Mary's cooking and sewing abilities are phenomenal (ask her to show you her African place mats). Dick is a wonderful guide on the walks - his knowledge of the wildlife and plant life is incredible (highlight was definitely sighting 2 of the world's 300 last Cape Mountain Zebras). We had a super time and will definitely come back. Thank you for a wonderful holiday Mary and Dick.

We had a most enjoyable time at Rolbaken.

The accommodation is in a charming cottage that consists of three en-suite rooms, a shared kitchen, dining room and living room. The cottage is well equipped to self-cater although we opted to be pampered and booked the room with dinner. We were lucky enough to share a dinner with Mary, Dick and their extended family. Everything was delicious. The room was very clean and spacious with a wonderful view onto the rolling hills.

We very much enjoyed all the hiking trails and hearing aboput all the projects that Mary and Dick are busy with. Thanks for a memorable stay!

A warm welcome, clean and neat accommodation with added touches and delicious home cooked food are just three of the wonderful things that made our stay at Rolbaken so special. Both Mary and Dick went out of their way to ensure our stay was a memorable one. Their farm is beautiful and the history and knowledge they can share with you is immense. We enjoyed breakfast each morning on the farm stoep (South African word for verandah or patio) and there was a constant supply of yummy homemade rusks and coffee to help ourselves to. Just sad we never made it up to the Dam for a swim but there is always a 'next time.' We left with fresh farm eggs and strawberries as well as homemade cordial as reminders of our lovely time there. Perfect for everyone from Honeymooners to Families! Try out this Karoo Gem you won't be disappointed! And if you dont want to leave the comfort of the farm and guesthouse - DONT - there is more than enough to do here - our very active two year old son was enthralled by the tractors, sheep, dogs, ostriches, fresh air and lovely open spaces!
