“Beautiful location, warm welcome,fantastic accommodation.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2009

I cannot understand the above reviews,we were a family of four travelling for the first time in South Africa,we were met by a beautiful garden with spectacular mountain backdrop, blue pool, tea served in our rooms which were interconnecting,we were invited to have dinner and served sherry and ate delicious ostrich. The rooms were very comfortable and we had morning tea in our room and a delicious breakfast. The rooms were spotless, the staff friendly and polite and helpful, the weather glorious and the baby ostriches intriguing.

When you first drive into the gardens at Thylitshia you feerl that you might enjoy your stay.

Of the 7 hotels in which we stayed in South Africa this had the third best garden.

However then you notice the stained exterior paint work and begin to have doubts.

You are shown to your room.First we were placed in the wrong room the room furthest away from the pool and the room which everyone has to pass to get to the main house.

We enquired was this the Honeymoon Suite we had reserved and were then moved to another room (No 6) which was arguably the closest to the pool. At this point you realise
hat the website is inaccurate and misleading. The Honeymoon Suite is most certainly NOT the ONLY room with direct access to the pool.

The rooms are small, dark, depressing.

The air conditioning does not work and no one cares

The furniture is old. Not the old and beautiful but the old and warped.

Drawers which cannot be opened doors which cannot be closed.

The mattress is also old. Hard and lumpy and very uncomfortable. Even worse it is covered with an old rubber sheet. This not only "crackles" at any movement but also
ensures that you will perspire the entire night.

The small toilet/showroom is uninviting An extremely dangerous step up to the toilet and a shower that ensures you wear sandles when using it.

You go to the dining room for the compulsory meal for which extra is charged. First you are offered a glass of cheap and nasty "sherry". the only connection between this liquid and Jerez in Spain is the bottle shape.
The dining room is attractive but all the candles make it uncomfortably warm.

The attractive room is necessary to take the attention away from the poor tasteless meal.

You have to argue to have your ONLY choice - ostrich - cooked the way you want it.

There is only one red wine and one white available for purchase. Not one of the beautiful wines found in South Africa but a nasty tasting over priced wine.

Breakfast next morning you discover is self service. O.K. no problem except the choice is poor and the quantities minute. The juice seems to be made from powder and is horribly sweet. The coffee bitter and left alone.

The promised ostrich farm tour - included in the price of the room - is cancelled because "the truck broke down". Bad Luck for the guest no one at the hotel cares. The wine estate tour
suffers the same fate.

The owners family are resident in the main house.- Rude and unfriendly making it obvious they consider themselves superior to common guests. This is re-inforced by the owner (away during our stay) who is totally unconcerned and responds "you are a liar". Clearly good customer relations and service are not part of Thylitshia.

It is with relief that you get into your car and drive away,

Would you recommend the hotel to others? Well if you hated them enough Yes.

All comments relate to room number 6.

After struggling to find any available accommodation in Oudtshoorn we found this property and booked two nights. After arriving it soon became apparent why it had been available. The room itself was very small and all fixtures and fittings appeared to be very old and generally in a poor state. Not only did the wardrobe smell but it only contained five hangers and was barely large enough to actually hang clothes in. There was no kettle in the room, the TV remote control didn't work and the TV only seemed to be able to receive two channels. The bed was also very small and uncomfortable. The state of the floor, especially in the bathroom, was also unacceptable. It was just plain dirty, so much so that we only removed our shoes to go to bed and would put them on again if we needed to go to the bathroom during the night. The toilet was also at the top of two small steps which were extremely dangerous, especially when it was dark.

If all this doesn't sound bad enough, on returning to the room at the end of the first day we were greeted by an awful smell and a shower which was full of dirty water. After heavy rains the drain had blocked and caused both the shower and sink to be unusable. A plumber was called who pumped out the drains and a cleaner was sent into the room to clean up. She left brown sludge marks on the shower mat and the bathroom smelt so awful that we didn't use it that night. Not once did the owner apologise for what had happened, or even suggest we go and sit in the main house while it was being fixed. On waking the following morning the shower was again full of dirty water. By this time we'd had enough and just wanted to get away as quickly as possible. On going to check out the owner never once asked how the room was, nor did he even bother to say goodbye.

The quality of the breakfasts and the evening meal was also very poor indeed.

This was by far and away the worst experience we have ever had in South Africa and I would urge people not to stay at this property. It is classified as 4 star but as far as I am concerned that is an insult to the other places we stayed with the same rating.

I would like to take time and respond to the above alligations.

Oudtshoorn did received a lot of rain during Nov/Dec 07. On average we recieve about 300ml of rain a year. During these 2 months alone, the total rainfall was +/- 370ml, much more than the average 100ml for both months. Roads were flooded, some wiped away, guests were stuck at there properties, and that is why Room 6 was open. The guests that should have arrived that day, couldn't because they were stuck in Knysna, which was cut off for 3 days. I had guests that had to stay over a extra night because they couldn't get to Knysna.

We live on a farm and have our own drainage system (as every other guesthouse in the region) which is uphold and cleaned on a regular basis. We were not the only guesthouse experiencing problems with our drains during this period......

The furniture is all antic and has been restored to its original state. All apliances is in good working order. We don't have kettles in the rooms (not required by a 4 star property) due to the losses we've had. I had lovely 2 cup stainess steal kettles in every room, but because they are so hard to get and very expensive, guests used to help themselfs and took them as souverneurs. I've cleard this matter with all the necessary assesment agencies and one advise that we offer room serves, and I've changed the system to 24/7 roomservice. If you are a guest and you enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at 03h00 in the morning, I'll make sure you have it. Guests can have as much coffee or tea as they wish, free of charge. Every night at dinner, either myself or one of my dutie managers ask every single guest in the house if they would like a cup of coffee/tee before breakfast served in the room. Some take atvantage of this offer, and some guests don't.

The enire guesthouse is tiled with clay tiles that was sourced at Wellington, (Paarl region) and personally driven to guesthouse by myself. On the eye they might "look dirty", but I can assure anybody that they are much cleaner and hygenic than a carpet. Some guests enjoy the "thrown" in the bathroom...

All meals prepaired at Thylitshia Villa Country Guesthouse is of the highest value. I take personal care on the preperation and cooking of the meal myself and can assure any person eating at my establishment that they will get value for money, or its free ! ! !

If a guest as to check out, I personally ask each and every single guest if they enjoyed their stay and if everything was satisfactory. Myself and my team ensure that every guest recieve the attention they require and ensure that they enjoy their stay.
