“Really well looked after, cracking little place to unwind.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2012

We drove from Cape Town to stay here and it was so nice to relax and unwind after spending several hours on the road. It's a lovely and homely resort, with such character and friendly staff.

Marius was a really friendly guy who was always happy to help out with anything we needed. The room was clean, the food was fantastic with plenty to chose from. It is situated right between Cango Caves and the Cango Ranch, both of which we saw in one day and are well worth a visit. Make sure you do the 'adventure' tour of the caves, it's brilliant!

I would recommend De Opstal to couples and honeymooners.

I have had the opportunity to stay there at least twice and was treated like royalty. A well looked after property and attention to detail is well taken care off. The owners personal touch makes the biggest difference and are very hands on. Nice garden to walk about, excellent swimming pool and very good dining area. The farm house touch with the wagon in the middle i found to be just really awesome. Catering for weddings, honeymoons or just a simple break would fit in with you by visiting them. The rooms are really spacious and comfortable and private.

This is a lovely property, with beautiful gardens, clearly well looked after, and the owners' personal touches are evident both outside and inside the rooms. We stayed in Room 15 which was very spacious, comfortable and had a private patio area with tea/coffee facilities and a fridge. We ate in the restaurant both nights and thought the food was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful and also happy to talk a little about the property and the history of some of the items which were 'features' in and around the restaurant eg the wagon, old bicycles etc. There are quite a few things you can see/do in the area eg we drove over the Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert and the views were spectacular, there's an Ostrich Farm experience up the road and Cheetah conservation project near Oudtshoorn. In addition, De Opstal provides a great place and atmosphere to just relax and do nothing by the pool or elsewhere in the gardens. We would definitely stay there again. The only thing the owners may wish to consider is whether their website lives up to the property - more pictures of the gardens and some outside views of the rooms would certainly enhance the website in our opinion.

This accomodation was amazing! So much care and attention has gone into every part of it and the love of the staff and owners is on show in everything! So many little details that made the stay so special.

Not only was our cottage beautiful and very well equipped, the grounds were like a little piece of Paradise!

The staff and owner were so very friendly and caring and made us feel so at home! It was a shame we only had 1 night here!

Located in a great position to visit the Cango Ostrich Farm and Caves!

Will definately return!

Room Tip: All the Cottages looked amazing but ours was 15!

We stayed here on our second stop on the garden route. The rooms are all individual, large and quirky. Ours was delightful, with a king-size bed and a small double. We had a lounge with log-fire and tv. This is somewhere you don't want to waste time watching tv! A spa bath and huge walk-in shower were a welcome find. Personalised with an eclectic mix of things around the room and scatter rugs everywhere. We had a terrace with chairs and table, outdoor fridge, tea/coffee making facilities and home-made biscuits. The view across the gardens was stunning, overlooking all the fabulous roses in full, healthy bloom. It wasn't warm enough to bathe in the open air pool, but I'm sure it would be lovely at the right time. Lovely touches all over the gardens; a pleasure to walk around. The food was very good, ostrich steaks all round with great attention to detail. Good breakfasts too.
Illonke was very friendly, answering questions about local places of interest and advising about the best route to take to Hermanus. While here, we visited the Cango Caves and Safari Ostrich Farm - both excellent. Plus a sundowner at Buffelsdrift, delightful.
Only one suggestion for De Opstal.......no dark coloured blankets, sheets and covers please. White bed linen is the only way for us and our friends.
We had a lovely welcome and a helpful send off with plenty of information on routes.

I have stayed now a few times at this country farm-style accommodation. This is not a hotel with stereo-typed decoration room after room. Each room is unique and each room has been decorated with old world charm as well as mod cons like some with spa baths, fantastic big showers, fire places etc. The garden is an absolute delight and to sit here and watch the sun setting behind the green hills is pure bliss. In winter, it can be chilly but the staff is only too happy to switch on the heater system which is part of the airconditioning unit or light the fire if there is a fire place in the unit.
Dinner is wholesome and ostrich steak barbecued on the spot to one's liking, is a big favourite. I know though that during low season when there are few tourists around, there might not be dinner, so check prior to arrival, but fortunately town is not too far to drive. Breakfast is fantastic with a big bowl of fruit salad and hot dishes including ostrich mince.
It is however the management and staff which makes this place stand out above the average hotel accommodation. They are always attentive, helpful, modest and friendly without being all over you. PS: during all the times I have stayed there, I have never been approached by staff with any religious opinions.

And all this I believe comes at a small town price instead of ridiculous city accommodation prices which is to me great value for money.

De Opstal, you will see me again...

Oudtshoorn is the 'capital' in this beautiful semi-desert and plenty of activities in the area including watching meerkats, drive over the spectacular Swart Berg Mountain Pass, visit ostrich farms, the beautiful Cango Caves and lots more. Be prepared though as it is semi-desert that summers can be hot and winters can be cold in South African standards.

It is always funny comparing one's own experience with others. But it is even funnier when you read someone writing about milk being re-warmed a few times because 'it has a crust on' and the a complaint that the toast comes with a flower. My goodness, it is obvious that some people never cooked milk themselves to realize as soon as milk cools a little, it will create a crust even after the first time! And to complain about a flower accompanying toast that was picked by a welcoming hand, is just really showing what kind of people we have left in this world. This is not an ostrich farm and I have never seen it advertised as one. And don't people 'pay' in other countries for the privilege to see a national park, a working farm like an ostrich farm, a museum, etc or is just in South Africa??? Complain about bad service or poor accommodation by all means, but otherwise stay at home where one's whining can do damage to one's own ears only.

I was unsure if I was going to enjoy my overnight stay here having read some reviews that indicated it was a bit religious in its orientation. I need not have worried. Yes, there were some signs of faith but absolutely nothing over the top or in your face. We found the staff lovely and helpful. The room we had was great and even had a log fire which we used more for effect than necessity, it really wasn't that cold! The grounds are very well kept and pretty with flowers everywhere and a nice pool area which we used. Dinner and breakfast were superb. We were travelling with friends and, like us, they thoroughly enjoyed their stay. I would definitely recommend this place.
