“What a surprise”

Fascinating exhibition of the Ostrich products, complete with the social history, probaly more interesting was the sad stories of the dreadful european actions with regards the Jews, kept me enraptured for too long

“interesting couple of hours”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

The CP Nel museaum is in an imposing stone building and houses a large collection of artefacts from the history of the area. Prominent are items relating to the history of the ostrich industry which drove the development of the city. There are some re-created shops and also some old cars. Overall this is a very interesting collection and you can spend a good couple of hours going through the rooms. At the end you can take your ticket for entry to a house used over the last century (about a ten minute walk). This is really interesting and contains many fine pieces of furniture. The curator was very helpful and we really enjoyed this visit. Well worth taking time if staying in Oudsthoorn.

“Little Jerusalem”

Interesting local history, including a section on the Lithuanian Jewish immigrants who found prosperity here in the ostrich-feather business (back when fashionable Victorian ladies wore them, ca. 1880-1914.

“Surprising”

You find a great variety of historical objects and information about ostrich products and history. Bring your grandma and grandpa. They will recognize many things from their childhood.

“Good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

We were the only visitors on an October morning. We enjoyed finding out the local history, especially the ostrich bit. Like most other SA museums we've visited we found it to be all reading and little interactivity so not so good for kids perhaps. It's sister museum of the Feather Palace was a bit misnamed but is a mildly intersting snapshot in time. Both are worth a visit if you have more than one day in the area
