“So-so - would not particularly recommend the area or the hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2010

Friends of ours raved both about Oudtshoorn and Stonebreaker Lodge, but in retrospect I am not entirely sure why. The caves are very impressive, I admit, and the ostrich farming side of things is interesting, but it is quite a lengthy detour from the Garden Route (redeemed only slightly by the fact that the route there is pretty dramatic and impressive). Stonebreaker was fine as a place to stay, but it was basic rather than luxurious and we did not find the hosts particularly friendly either upon arrival, over breakfast, or at check-out. Breakfast itself was also rather disappointing compared to others we had had around the country.

The lodge is set in a beautiful valley, and the rooms are surrounded by well kept pretty gardens. The accommodation is clean and it is a pleasure to sit on the verandah and watch the sun go down or wake in the morning to the birdsong.
The breakfast is the same every morning, and for a long time stay I think this becomes monotonous -- also the coffee was poor quality instant, or coffee bags. Good filter coffee is an essential drawcard for any overnight establishment. The option of requesting other meals was not well explained, however the restaurant at a nearby lodge was recommended - die oue meul - and the food here was excellent, but one had to drive there.
The aloe walk was well worth the climb.

Did not receive good service. Receptionist was unfriendly. Furniture was removed from the room without a word from us. Breakfast was not enough for all guests on both mornings.

This is a very difficult review to write. First the good points. The place is immaculate. I was expecting something a bit rough and ready but in fact it was all very smart. The room was great; quite large with an excellent en-suite bathroom. They had a small pool and internet access.

Then this is where it gets tricky. The first thing that went wrong was that they deducted the cost of my full stay from my credit card instead of the one night deposit. When I pointed it out to them they apologised and offered to refund the balance but I said not to bother. The next thing was that their website and in-room literature state that they will do evening meals on request. This place is 15km from Oudtshoorn so restaurants are few and far between. When I asked about an evening meal I was told that they only did them 'when we have stock'! Fortunately they do have a sister restaurant over the road but it is a short car ride away with a difficult turning off a bend which isn't much fun in the dark.

The rates include full english breakfast but the first morning this was not offered until I went to ask at the desk. To be fair on the second morning it was laid out buffet style.

As I said at the beginning, this is a very difficult place to assess. We got the feeling that the owners were away and that their kids were trying to run it,,and not very efficiently. It is a very smart facility but something really isn't quite right!
