“Cozy cottage”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2011

Stayed in the stone cottage, bit with small patio. Used the kitchen in the mainhouse though. Nice pool area with a bbq and good views over Oudtshorn.

Can't recommend going to an ostrich farm, it is too commercialized.

Instead drive up to Swartberg pass and back to town via Arthur's Pass. You will see plenty of ostriches along the road - for free.

Our visit to this lovely backpackers' old fashioned home was very special. We had great conversations with the owner, and artist of this lodge. The location is very practical and within walking reach of any stores you need and any restaurants you would like to visit. Oudtshoorn is a colorful place to visit and the Karoo region is amazing!

Room Tip: Some rooms have a fabulous view!

Oudtshoorn itself is nothing too special. A cute outpost on the former edge of civilization founded around 1843 that is aging gracefully.
Karoo Soul Backpackers is owned and operated by a cute, friendly, local girl who's obviously done enough budget travel of her own to "get it". The location of the property is not great--it's on a somewhat busy road a short walk from the town center--but the house itself, which is a Bungalow circa 1928--is well preserved and is perched high up on a hill with excellent views of the mountains that surround the city--and a fantastic wrap around porch that is a great spot for watching the sunset over the mountains to the west--or dining al fresco. (Self catering only at this property--so if you are looking for a B&B or lodge that has a restaurant, there are plenty of other options in town.)
There's a small pool with a covered outdoor lounge area adjacent to it--along with the requisite friendly dog and mischievous cat haunting the property.
The city and environs are quite safe and have plenty of tree-lined streets filled with vintage houses and jacaranda trees.
Not much to do in town but plenty of activities in the surrounding mountains.
The rooms are spotless, tastefully furnished--spare but classy--and there is a good internet connection (including WiFi) that is not completely free but is quite reasonable.
The room rates were very fair (we paid $320 for a double with shared bath).
Large kitchen for self-catering and plenty of places to eat outside under the deep soffits of the wrap around porch.

Room Tip: The rooms all seem quite similar and all good.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2011

We have never stayed at a backpackers so didn't know what to expect but it was really wonderful. Very peaceful with the pool area being a particular oasis - great place for a G&T at the end of the day (or mid-afternoon!!) We stayed in the cottage which was very private and clean. It also sleeps four so we had lots of space. Would give this place 5 stars but have marked it down due to the plumbing - not the best shower in the world but this was in a water-stressed area. Great service from Ilze and Ivan - very helpful.
Would recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for the cottage for extra privacy

Karoo Soul is an idyllic spot with a magical and genteel feel. The rooms are lovely, well presented and very comfortable. The 360 verandah provides the perfect spot for chilling and the pool area is perfect for having a drink and watching the sun go down over the lovely view.
I stayed there with some friends in October 2011 and we were made to feel extremely welcome and thoroughly enjoyed the friendly, warm atmosphere created by the owner and staff.

Room Tip: They are all good, spacious and well presented!

My husband and I stayed in the cottage which was very charming. The room was spacious and very clean. The owner and staff are very friendly and helpful. It is in a quiet area with secure parking and we had a very good sleep. There is a lovely pool which we didn't use as it was quite cool when we were there. Breakfast is not included in the price but there is a kitchen in the main house that you can use.
